Article Abstract

Coupled-column separation using restricted access media as the first dimension in order to exclude macromolecules and retain micromolecules has been successfully used for a number of biological fluids. This paper describes the first method developed and validated for the analysis in a single run of the enantiomers of modafinil and its two major metabolites. The method was developed using a bidimensional HPLC system by coupling a restricted access medium (RAM) bovine serum albumin (BSA) column (1.0 cm x 0.46 cm i.d.) to an amylose tris[(S)-1-phenylethylcarbamate] chiral column. The method was fully validated and showed good linearity, precision, accuracy, sensitivity and selectivity, allowing it to be used for pharmacokinetic studies. The quality of the performance of both columns was maintained with over 280 plasma injections of 100 microl.

Humanitarian crises, particularly in conflict zones, create cascading disruptions that impact every aspect of daily life, including health and disease outcomes. While international humanitarian frameworks categorize these crises into discrete operational clusters, affected populations experience them as interwoven, systemic failures. This study examines how conflict-induced disruptions transform a preventable and typically self-limiting disease-Hepatitis A-into a fatal outcome.

Exposure to traumatic events is common amongst children from refugee backgrounds. Given the restricted access of refugee children to formal specialist resources and disrupted parental support mechanisms in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), teachers are increasingly expected to be the primary responders to the complex psychosocial needs of trauma-exposed refugee children. However, despite LMICs hosting over two-thirds of the world's refugee children, our current knowledge of how teachers respond to these needs is predominantly drawn from studies conducted in well-resourced, high-income countries, which fails to capture the unique experiences of teachers in inadequately resourced schools in LMICs.

Purpose: Adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) paired with intravitreal injection of a viral vector coding for the calcium indicator GCaMP has enabled visualization of neuronal activity in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) at single cell resolution in the living eye. However, the inner limiting membrane (ILM) restricts viral transduction to the fovea in humans and non-human primates, hindering both therapeutic intervention and physiological study of the retina. To address this issue, we explored peeling the ILM before intravitreal injection to expand calcium imaging beyond the fovea in the living primate eye.
