The oxidation theory proposes that LDL oxidation is an early event in atherosclerosis and that oxidized LDL contributes to atherogenesis in triggering inflammation. In contrast to the copper-modified LDL, there are few studies using myeloperoxidase-modified LDL (Mox-LDL) as an inflammation inducer. Our aim is to test whether Mox-LDL could constitute a specific inducer of the inflammatory response. Albumin, which is the most abundant protein in plasma and which is present to an identical concentration of LDL in the intima, was used for comparison. The secretion of IL-8 by endothelial cells (Ea.hy926) and TNF-alpha by monocytes (THP-1) was measured in the cell medium after exposure of these cells to native LDL, native albumin, Mox-LDL, or Mox-albumin. We observed that Mox-LDL induced a 1.5- and 2-fold increase (ANOVA; P < 0.001) in IL-8 production at 100 microg/mL and 200 microg/mL, respectively. The incubation of THP-1 cells with Mox-LDL (100 microg/mL) increased the production of TNF-alpha 2-fold over the control. Native LDL, albumin, and Mox-albumin showed no effect in either cellular types. The myeloperoxidase-modified LDL increase in cytokine release by endothelial and monocyte cells and by firing both local and systemic inflammation could induce atherogenesis and its development.

Background: Electronegative LDL (LDL(-)) is a circulant modified LDL with inflammatory properties whose proportion raises in ischemic events. The soluble form of LDL receptor related protein 1 (sLRP1) increases in blood in pathological situations, including ischemic stroke. We aimed to evaluate the effect of LDL(-) on sLRP1 release from monocytes and macrophages.

Background: Although aggressive low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction has demonstrated significant cardiovascular benefits, concerns have emerged regarding potential adverse effects of very low LDL-C on cellular functions, particularly membrane integrity as cholesterol constitutes an essential component of cellular membranes. The phase angle (PhA), derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) reflects cellular membranes integrity and nutritional status. The MALIPID study aimed to assess if LDL-C levels are associated with PhA in high cardiovascular risk patients.

Background: There is no consensus for using statins for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), because no randomized controlled trial has exclusively investigated statins in this population.
Objectives: In this study, the authors sought to evaluate the long-term risks and benefits of statins for primary prevention in adults with T1DM.
Methods: We performed a sequential target trial emulation comparing statin initiation vs noninitiation using UK primary care data from the IQVIA Medical Research Data database.

Background: The widely-used anthropometric indices, such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), have limitations in their use as indicators of body composition. Recent studies proposed weight-adjusted waist index (WWI=WC/√(body weight)) as an alternative index for body composition but it is unclear whether WWI reflects body composition in different racial/ethnic groups.
Objective: We examined the associations of WWI, BMI, and WC with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)-measured body composition, biomarkers (fasting blood glucose, HDL-cholestrol, LDL-cholestrol, triglyceride), and handgrip strength.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a key functional food in the Mediterranean diet, renowned for its multiple health benefits. Rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid, and bioactive compounds like polyphenols and tocopherols, EVOO helps reduce LDL cholesterol, increase HDL cholesterol, and protect against oxidative stress. Regular consumption is associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases.
