Previously we found that the organic components in scallop shell promote lipolysis in differentiated 3T3-L1 and C3H10T1/2 adipocyte cells, and that incorporating scallop shell powder into the diet of rats reduced the amount of white adipose tissue. In this study, we used RT-PCR to investigate the effect of ingesting scallop shell powder on the gene expression profile of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) regulating energy metabolism in rats. Feeding of scallop shell powder increased mRNA levels of UCP1 and UCP2 in white adipose tissue. By contrast, scallop shell powder had no effect on the expression of UCP1 in brown adipose tissue, although the expression level of UCP2 mRNA decreased significantly. These results suggest that feeding scallop shell powder increases gene expression of UCP1 that may regulate energy metabolism in white adipose tissue, resulting in the observed reduction in weight of white adipose tissue.

The noble scallop Chlamys nobilis is the main cultured economic bivalve on the south coast of China. However, parasitic and bacterial infections have caused great economic losses on the scallop in recent years. Our previous study showed that the black shell disease caused by polychaete parasites leads to increased mortality and slow growth of the scallop.

Lipophilic marine toxins (LMTs), including pectenotoxins (PTXs) and yessotoxins (YTXs), are emerging contaminants in Korean coastal waters. This study investigated the seasonal patterns, spatial distribution, and potential microalgal producers of LMTs in phytoplankton, wild mussels, and commercial shellfish collected along the southern coast of Korea in 2023. PTX2 was predominant in phytoplankton during early spring, while homo-YTX (hYTX) became dominant from late spring to summer.

Extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall significantly reduce surface salinity in coastal waters, presenting considerable challenges to the aquaculture of Japanese scallops () in shallow cage systems. This study investigated the effects of chronic low-salinity stress on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and gene expression profile of using a 60-day salinity gradient experiment. S33 represents the control treatment with normal seawater salinity (33‱), while S30, S28, and S26 represent experimental groups with progressively lower salinities of 30‱, 28‱, and 26‱, respectively.

Among the commercial mollusks from the Black Sea, the ark clam , the oyster , the mussel , the scallop , and the gastropod hold the top positions in terms of cultivation and harvesting volumes. Mollusk shells are attracting attention due to their potential use in various biotechnological applications, including nutraceutical production. In the present study, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, concentrations of essential trace elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, and I) were measured in shells of the five mollusks sampled from the same biotope.
