Yeast is a widely used recombinant protein expression system. We expanded its utility by engineering the yeast Pichia pastoris to secrete human glycoproteins with fully complex terminally sialylated N-glycans. After the knockout of four genes to eliminate yeast-specific glycosylation, we introduced 14 heterologous genes, allowing us to replicate the sequential steps of human glycosylation. The reported cell lines produce complex glycoproteins with greater than 90% terminal sialylation. Finally, to demonstrate the utility of these yeast strains, functional recombinant erythropoietin was produced.

Models of how things spread often assume that transmission mechanisms are fixed over time. However, social contagions-the spread of ideas, beliefs, innovations-can lose or gain in momentum as they spread: ideas can get reinforced, beliefs strengthened, products refined. Amplicon sequencing is a popular method for understanding the diversity of bacterial communities in samples containing multiple organisms as exemplified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Another application of amplicon sequencing includes multiplexing both primer sets and samples, allowing sequencing of multiple targets in multiple samples in the same sequencing run. Multiple tools exist to process the amplicon sequencing data produced via the short-read Illumina platform, but there are fewer options for long-read Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing, or for processing data from environmental surveillance or other sources with many different organisms.

Effective mosquito control is essential for reducing the transmission of vector-borne diseases. This study focuses on the comprehensive characterization of mosquitocidal toxins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis (Bti) VCRC B646 and the associated insecticidal genes. To overcome the potential issue of active site blockage by surfactants in colloidal synthesis, alternative synthetic approaches must be explored. In this study, we investigated both solvent-free and colloidal thermolysis routes to synthesize nickel sulfides (NiS and NiS) using sulfur-based Ni complexes, [Ni(SCO(CH))] (Ni-Xan) and [Ni(SCN(CH))] (Ni-DTC) as precursors. The solvent-free decomposition of these complexes produced ligand-free NiS and NiS in the absence or presence of triphenylphosphine (TPP), respectively.
