Photoperiod is considered the most important factor that entrains animal rhythms, including the reproductive cycle. The present study tested differences in sex maturation and sex steroid hormones of yellowtail damselfish (Chrysiptera parasema) exposed to a white fluorescent bulb (12L:12D and 14L:10D) or long-afterglow phosphorescent pigment (LumiNova sheet) for 4 months. At the end of the experiment, in the phosphorescent group, mRNA expressions of gonadotropin hormones [(GTHs, including gonadotropin (GTH) α and luteinizing hormone (LH) β)], estrogen receptor (ER), and vitellogenin were significantly higher than in the photoperiod groups (12L:12D and 14L:10D), and these results are consistent with those of Western blotting for protein expression.

Characterization of the photosynthetic electron transport in a mutant of Spirulina platensis, generated by chemical mutagenesis, demonstrated that the electron transfer from the plastoquinone (PQ) to cytochrome b6/f was slowed. Thermoluminescence (TL) measurements suggested the presence of reversed energy flow via PQ, which resulted in an emergence of the plant-like after-glow TL band at 45 degrees C that could be enhanced by the transthylakoidal pH gradient and could be eliminated by an uncoupler, FCCP. The localization of the changes in the electron transport of the mutant cells measured by various methods revealed that the re-oxidation of the PQ pool is hampered in the mutant compared to the wild-type cells.

A heparinized high-strength elastomer has been developed which is potentially useful as a nonthrombogenic vascular prosthesis. A surface hydroxylated styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymer with at least 40% extent of reaction after glow-discharge cleaning was coated with a 20% acetylated polyvinyl alcohol/heparin mixture containing glutaraldehyde and magnesium chloride. After curing at 80 degrees C for 100 min, the polyvinyl alcohol, heparin, and hydroxylated SBS were covalently bound to each other by acetal bridges.

Glow discharge treated (GDT) inorganic materials are sterile and free of all organic contaminants. Such materials implanted in the canine inferior vena cava often demonstrate significant thromboresistance. Standard Pyrex glass tubing was GDT in argon to provide a surface free energy above 70 dynes/cm, slight surface negativity, and other surface-physical modifications of its interface.
