Objectives: Mitral valve replacement (MVR) in patients with severe mitral annular calcification (MAC) remains technically challenging because of the risk of annular disruption and associated complications. We report short-term outcomes of a novel surgical approach that creates an atrial neoannulus for prosthetic valve implantation in high-risk patients with severe mitral stenosis or mixed disease.
Methods: Between September 2021 and January 2025, 27 consecutive patients with severe MAC underwent MVR at a tertiary referral center.
Background: Cystic echinococcosis, or hydatid cystic disease, is a globally prevalent zoonotic infection that typically affects the liver or lungs.
Case Summary: A 28-year-old man residing in the UAE presented with chronic hemoptysis, melena, and weight loss. Chest radiography revealed multiple bilateral lung nodules, and a subsequent surgical lung biopsy confirmed necrotizing granulomatous inflammation, suggestive of a chronic inflammatory process.
Background: Iron deficiency among women of reproductive age, driven by factors such as inadequate dietary intake, menstrual blood loss, and heightened iron demands during pregnancy, remains a global public health concern. This research focuses on the prevalence of anemia among Muslim women in India over the last two decades, with a particular focus on disparities and trends.
Methods: Anemia among Muslim women of reproductive age (15-49 years) is studied using the four rounds of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-2 to NFHS-5) to analyze the trends and disparities using bivariate cross-tabulations, concentration index, P/R ratios, and odds ratios across different socioeconomic factors.
