Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common aggressive paediatric brain tumour and, despite the recent progress in the treatments of MB patients, there is still an urgent need of complementary or alternative therapeutic options for MB infants. As no studies before now have thoroughly investigated the risk associated with the exposure to low-dose ionizing radiations in patients undergoing catheter ablation (CA), we aimed to evaluate the oxidative and DNA damage in 59 CA patients (10 of whom received N-acetylcysteine (NAC) before the procedure). A burst of oxidized/reduced glutathione ratio was observed 3 hours after procedure that was diminished by NAC administration. 8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) concentrations, index of oxidative DNA damage, showed a peak 24 hours after CA.

Doxorubicin (DOXO) treatment is limited by its cardiotoxicity, since it causes cardiac-progenitor-cell depletion. Although the cardioprotective role of the stromal cell-derived factor-1/C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (SDF1/CXCR4) axis is well established, its involvement during DOXO-induced cardiotoxicity has never been investigated. We showed that in a mouse model of DOXO-induced cardiomyopathy, CXCR4 cells were increased in response to DOXO, mainly in human cardiac mesenchymal progenitor cells (CmPC), a subpopulation with regenerative potential.
