Objective: An increasing trend in the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been reported in Taiwan. GDM has been linked to various adverse maternal outcomes over a long period, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, evidence implies that the effects of GDM on the mid-term surrogate risk factors for these diseases are limited.

The nurses work long hours and in various shifts, and often accompanied by depression, fatigue, and sleep disorders. Many studies have found that 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is related to mental health. We aimed to investigate the relationship between depression, sleep problems, fatigue, and serum 25(OH)D levels in shift nurses.

Aims/introduction: Maternal hyperglycemia leads to adverse pregnancy outcomes, and also subsequently affects both mothers and their offspring in later life. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is also believed to be increasing. More precise nationwide and up-to-date data on GDM are required.

The ability of phosphonium cations to act as intracellular transport vectors is well-established. Phosphonioalkylthiosulfate zwitterions, and ω-thioacetylalkylphosphonium salts, which act as 'masked thiolate' ligands, are useful precursors for the formation of phosphonium-functionalised gold nanoparticles, enabling the nanoparticles to be transported into cells for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In this study we have completed cytotoxicity studies of ω-thioacetylpropylphosphonium salts derived from triphenylphosphine and tri(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine, which show that the compounds are only toxic towards PC3 prostate cancer cells at high concentrations and at prolonged incubation periods and display IC values of 67 μM and 252 μM respectively, significantly higher than those of other phosphonium salts.

Article Synopsis
  • - Two new triphenylarsonium alkylthiolate precursors have been identified: a thiosulfate zwitterion and a thioacetate salt.
  • - The structural characteristics of these compounds were analyzed, and their cytotoxic effects on PC3 cancer cells were assessed.
  • - These arsonium compounds were utilized to create gold nanoparticles that are decorated with triphenylarsonium groups, potentially for biomedical applications.

Background: : Research on cross-national marriages in Taiwan has concentrated on development and adaptation issues related to the children of such relationships. Taiwan has seen a dramatic increase in immigration and cultural diversity over the past 2 decades. Understanding the dynamics of cross-national families from initial courtship through marriage and having and raising children is, thus, important.
