Background: Viral respiratory infections are one of the main causes of hospitalization in children. Even if mortality rate is low, 2% to 3% of the hospitalized children need mechanical ventilation. Risk factors for admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) are well known, while few studies have described risk factors for invasive ventilator support and prolonged hospitalization.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge effect all over the world and its impact has been even more profound in the world of Healthcare. In this brief report we'd like to report about our experience in pediatric newly diagnosed thrombocytopenia and how we have seen the landscape of this disease change in the last 2 years. In particular, we believe that the use of personal protective equipment and lockdown measures have reduced the incidence of viral triggers that are supposed to be responsible for the vast majority of ITP cases.
