Background: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a group of dementias characterized by progressive loss of specific language functions with relative sparing of other cognitive domains. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been introduced as a potential therapeutic option for PPA. We aim to evaluate the efficacy of tDCS in improving cognitive and language functions in patients with PPA.

Background: Tracheal extubation after general anesthesia may cause hemodynamic and respiratory complications, with no established strategies to prevent them. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of beta-blockers in patients undergoing tracheal extubation.

Methods: We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL databases for randomized controlled trials up to 2024 comparing beta-blockers to placebo in patients undergoing tracheal extubation.

Recent studies highlight the benefits of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) combined with standard medical treatment (SMT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with large infarcts compared to SMT alone. This study evaluates the efficacy, bleeding risk, and mortality of EVT versus SMT in AIS patients with Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) ≤5. A systematic review of MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases was conducted on June 6, 2024, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing EVT plus SMT with SMT alone in AIS patients with ASPECTS ≤5.

Deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is a therapeutic intervention for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) primarily aimed at improving motor symptoms. However, the effects of STN-DBS on non-motor symptoms (NMS), such as olfactory dysfunction (OD), remain poorly understood. We performed a systematic review and single-arm meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of STN-DBS on OD in PD patients.

Tandem occlusions, characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of both extracranial and ipsilateral intracranial arterial occlusions, represents a challenging subset of large vessel occlusion (LVO) strokes. Currently, the treatment choice for tandem infarcts involves intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) followed by endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). In current literature, direct head-to-head comparisons between Alteplase and Tenecteplase for IVT in patients with tandem occlusions remain limited.

Introduction: Tinidazole shows potential as a first-line treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV). However, its superiority to metronidazole remains uncertain. Therefore, this meta-analysis compares tinidazole versus metronidazole in patients with BV.

Introduction: Up to one-third of pediatric patients with acute appendicitis present with radiological evidence of appendicoliths. However, whether appendicolith presence influences prognosis under conservative management compared to non-appendicolith appendicitis remains uncertain.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science databases for studies comparing pediatric appendicolith and non-appendicolith appendicitis managed conservatively with antibiotics, fluids, and percutaneous drainage.

Background: The efficacy and safety of P2Y12 inhibitors (P2Y12i) with aspirin in patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic cerebrovascular events remains a topic of ongoing debate. Therefore, we conducted an updated meta-analysis to compare these drugs with aspirin alone.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the two treatment regimens in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular events.

Background: Recent evidence indicates that statins have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, leading to several investigations of whether statins have a neuroprotective effect and may benefit patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the potential mechanisms of this class of medications as modifiers of the course of PD in already diagnosed patients is still unclear.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of statins as modifiers of established PD.

Introduction: Recent studies have demonstrated an association between hypoglycemic medications and neuroprotective action in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Therefore, in this meta-analysis, our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of these medications, compared to placebo, as disease-modifying therapy in patients with PD.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane for studies comparing the use of hypoglycemic drugs and placebo in patients with PD.

Essential tremor (ET) is identified as the most prevalent movement disorder, primarily characterized by tremors in both upper extremities. The spectrum of surgical options for ET includes gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) and other stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) modalities. Despite the limitations of these options, SRS is deemed an essential and indispensable approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy can lead to serious complications, prompting the need for medication such as hydralazine and labetalol to lower blood pressure.
  • A systematic review of 19 randomized controlled trials compared the effectiveness and safety of intravenous labetalol versus hydralazine in managing these conditions.
  • The findings indicated no significant differences in blood pressure outcomes between the two medications, but labetalol was found to significantly reduce instances of maternal hypotension compared to hydralazine.

  • A systematic review compared the effectiveness and safety of oral versus topical minoxidil in treating androgenetic alopecia, analyzing data from four randomized clinical trials involving 279 patients.
  • The study found no significant differences between the two forms of minoxidil regarding hair density and diameter, suggesting both treatments are similarly effective.
  • However, oral minoxidil resulted in a higher occurrence of hypertrichosis (excess hair growth), while the incidence of hypotension was not significantly different between the two groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a common treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD) when symptoms are hard to control with medication, with this review comparing outcomes of surgery using general anesthesia (GA) versus local anesthesia plus sedation (LA + S).
  • The review included 3 randomized studies with 203 patients, analyzing various health measures like motor improvement and risk of complications post-surgery.
  • Findings showed no significant differences in clinical outcomes, infection rates, or mood changes between the two anesthesia methods after a 6-month follow-up.
