Radiotherapy is a common treatment for head and neck cancer but often causes oral mucositis, which reduces quality of life. Recent studies suggest that radiotherapy affects the oral microbiota, but whether it contributes to the severity of mucositis has been unclear. This study investigated the association between radiotherapy-induced changes in the oral microbiota and the severity of mucositis using 16 S rRNA gene sequencing.

Thoracic re-irradiation has a high risk of severe adverse events, and re-irradiation with curative intent has rarely been performed. However, in recent years, with the introduction of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic body radiation therapy, it has become possible to deliver high doses to the target lesions while minimizing the doses to surrounding tissues. The patient in this case had a history of definitive radiation therapy for esophageal cancer.

Stage IV breast cancer is difficult to cure and is mainly treated with systemic therapy.
