Unlabelled: Bleeding and thromboembolic events (BTE) increase the mortality of COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The current analysis aimed to assess frequency and determinants of BTE according to their location and severity in a retrospective analysis of the German ECMO COVID-19 registry. Logistic regression was applied to identify factors influencing ICU survival as well as variables associated with risks of BTE.

Methods: The primary objective of the present post-hoc analysis of a multicenter, multinational, retrospective study was to assess factors impacting prognosis in ICU patients with PJP through univariable and multivariable analyses.
Resistance to chemotherapy of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is largely driven by intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) due to tumor cell plasticity and clonal diversity. To develop alternative strategies to overcome this defined mechanism of resistance, tools to monitor and quantify ITH in a rapid and scalable fashion are needed urgently. Background: This study aimed to approximate the level of extravascular lung water (EVLW) in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia using quantitative imaging techniques. The elevation of EVLW is known to correlate with the degree of diffuse alveolar damage and linked with the mortality of critically ill patients. Transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) is the gold standard technique to estimate the total amount of EVLW, but it is invasive and requires specialized equipment and trained personnel.

Methods: A retrospective medical record review was conducted at 16 sites in Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom). Eligible records were from patients aged ≥ 18 years at the time of isavuconazole initiation and received at least one dose of isavuconazole for suspected or confirmed invasive aspergillosis (IA) or invasive mucormycosis (IM) during the eligibility period (October 15, 2015 to June 30, 2019).

Purpose: A host-protein signature score, consisting of serum-concentrations of C-reactive protein, tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand, and interferon gamma-induced protein 10, was validated for distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections as an antimicrobial stewardship measure for routine clinical practice among adult patients in a German tertiary hospital.
Methods: This single-centre, explorative study prospectively assessed the host-protein signature score, comparing it with serum procalcitonin (PCT) in patients with blood stream infections (BSI) and evaluating its efficacy in patients with viral infections against the standard of care (SOC) to assess the need for antibiotics due to suspected bacterial super/coinfection. Manufacturer-specified threshold scores were used to differentiate viral (< 35) and bacterial (> 65) infections.
End-stage liver disease is a life-threatening clinical syndrome combined with a state of immune dysfunction. In this constellation patients are prone to bacterial, fungal and viral infections associated with markedly increased morbidity and mortality rates. Bacterial infections are the most prevalent kind of infection in patients with end-stage liver disease accounting for nearly 30%.

Background: The clinical spectrum of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection ranges from an asymptomatic to life-threatening disease. Considering the broad spectrum of severity, reliable biomarkers are required for early risk stratification and prediction of clinical outcomes. The goal of this study was to investigate the influence of a structured, objective, microbiological monitoring program on the prognosis of COVID-19 patients with mechanical ventilation.

Background: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is an opportunistic, life-threatening disease commonly affecting immunocompromised patients. Nivolumab is a promising monoclonal antibody inhibitor of programmed death-1, a protein on the surface of T-cells. As such, it is approved for use in patients with multiple advanced malignancies and can significantly elongate progression-free survival. However, monoclonal antibody inhibitors can lead to adverse hepatic reactions, which in rare cases result in further hepatic damage.
