Background/aims: This study investigated whether telomere length (TL) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients is shorter than in controls, whether TL in RA patients with interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) differs from that in those without ILD (RA-nonILD), and whether TL varies according to RA-ILD patterns.

Methods: TL was measured in peripheral leukocytes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results were compared between controls (n = 14), RA (n = 70), RA-ILD (n = 53), and RA-nonILD (n = 53), and between the subgroups with usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP; n = 32) and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP; n = 8), with age- and sex-matching in each comparison.

In the absence of treatment, detection of pathogenic RNA viruses and quarantine of infected individuals are critical for controlling the infection spread. Conventional antibody-based methods often lack the required accuracy and sensitivity, due to the need for a substantial amount of viral antigens. Similarly, traditional reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction methods face challenges in providing timely results due to their multiple thermal nucleic acid amplification steps.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to determine if tegoprazan is as effective as lansoprazole in healing erosive esophagitis (EE) within four weeks, with a specific focus on rapid mucosal healing and symptom relief by week two.
  • - In a randomized trial of 218 patients, results showed that tegoprazan had significantly higher healing rates compared to lansoprazole at both two weeks (88.4% vs. 82.6%) and four weeks (95.2% vs. 86.2%).
  • - The findings suggest that tegoprazan is superior to lansoprazole for treating EE, but more research is needed to fully understand its advantages, especially for severe cases

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) patients are at high risk of stroke with ∼90% clots originating from the left atrial appendage (LAA). Clinical understanding of blood-flow based parameters and their potential association with stroke for AF patients remains poorly understood. We hypothesize that slow blood-flow either in the LA or the LAA could lead to the formation of blood clots and is associated with stroke for AF patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Tegoprazan is a new medication that helps treat acid-related disorders and was tested for its effectiveness on ulcers caused by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with gastric neoplasia.
  • In a study involving 160 patients, those taking tegoprazan had a 30.3% healing rate of artificial ulcers after 4 weeks, compared to 22.1% for those on esomeprazole, showing tegoprazan was more effective initially.
  • However, after 8 weeks, the overall healing rates were similar between the two groups, indicating that both medications ultimately had comparable effects on ulcer healing.
