Background: Pediatric extremity fractures represent a frequent cause of emergency department visits, with inequity in care linked to socioeconomic status, race, and insurance type. Despite standardized treatment algorithms, currently available evidence indicates that socially disadvantaged children experience delays in surgical fixation and pain management. This scoping review aims to evaluate the impact of socioeconomic factors on multiple elements of pediatric extremity fracture management.

: Early sport specialization, involving intensive focus on a single sport for greater than 8 months per year at a prepubescent age, has become increasingly common in young athletes. While early sport specialization is often regarded as essential for success, there is growing concern that the potential risks to young athletes may outweigh the perceived benefits. Although numerous studies have explored early sport specialization, there has been no summative review on the topic in regard to the comprehensive impact on outcomes in these athletes.

Objective: Perform a systematic critical appraisal of current clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for frozen shoulder.

Literature Survey: Systematic review of CPGs (PROSPERO number CRD42022368775). Inclusion criteria- CPGs written in English providing guidance on the evaluation and or treatment for frozen shoulder, traumatic injury and neurologic CPGs were excluded.

Introduction: Systematic reviews are considered the highest level of evidence that can help guide evidence-informed decisions in nursing practice, education, and even health policy. Systematic review publications have increased from a sporadic few in 1980s to more than 10,000 systematic reviews published every year and around 30,000 registered in prospective registries.

Methods: A cross-sectional design and a variety of data sources were triangulated to identify the journals from which systematic reviews would be evaluated for adherence to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 reporting guidelines and scope.

Background: Racial and ethnic disparities in genomic testing could exacerbate disparities in access to precision cancer therapies and survival-particularly in the context of lung cancer where genomic testing has been recommended for the past decade. However, prior studies assessing disparities in genomic testing have yielded mixed results.

Methods: We conducted a systemic review to examine racial and ethnic disparities in the use of genomic testing among lung cancer patients in the United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Shoulder pain is a prevalent issue among swimmers, and the causes can vary based on factors like age and competition level.
  • This study aimed to evaluate objective measures related to shoulder pain in swimmers, analyzing data from various age groups and competition levels to find potential links between test results and pain.
  • The analysis, which reviewed 27 studies, suggested specific factors associated with shoulder pain in different swimmer demographics, but concluded that more research and validation of cut points are needed for comprehensive understanding, especially in older swimmers.

Introduction: Health inequities remain a notable barrier for pediatric patients, especially in conditions such as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), where the efficacy of nonsurgical treatment is dependent on early diagnosis and referral to a specialist. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are nonmedical factors that affect health outcomes, such as economic stability, neighborhood environment, and discrimination. Although these factors have been studied throughout the AIS literature, considerable inconsistencies remain across studies regarding the investigation of SDOH for this population.

Introduction: Existing research has established a correlation between post-traumatic mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, and various aspects of recovery, such as pain exacerbations, reduced functional recovery, and lowered patient satisfaction. However, the influence of pre-existing mental health conditions on orthopaedic trauma outcomes has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of this study was to systematically review literature addressing the association between pre-existing mental health conditions and patient outcomes following surgical interventions for lower extremity fractures in non-geriatric populations.

Purpose: Rural hospitals are closing at unprecedented rates, with hundreds more at risk of closure in the coming 2 years. Multiple federal policies are being developed and implemented without a salient understanding of the emerging literature evaluating rural hospital closures and its impacts. We conducted a scoping review to understand the impacts of rural hospital closure to inform ongoing policy debates and research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify and evaluate patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used in clinical practice and research for neck pain to help create a core set of valuable measures for patients and clinicians.
  • A comprehensive search of various medical databases yielded 37 systematic reviews from an initial pool of 7,003 articles, analyzing common physical therapy interventions for neck pain that included at least one PROM.
  • The findings highlighted the presence of 31 different PROMs, with 11 measuring constructs like disability and pain intensity, though there was significant variability in how psychosocial factors were measured, indicating a gap in studies addressing this area.

Objectives: Analyze the information-seeking practices and identify the information and education needs of nurses in a war veterans nursing home. Develop an online toolkit for use at the nurses' stations to meet nurses' health information needs.

Methods: Investigators employed mixed methods to determine the health information needs of the participating nurses at the skilled nursing facility using an online questionnaire and in-person observations.

Purpose: Rehabilitation science programs utilize cognitive and non-cognitive factors to select students who can complete the didactic and clinical portions of the program and pass the licensure exam. Cognitive factors such a prior grade point average and standardized test scores are known to be predictive of academic performance, but the relationship of non-cognitive factors and performance is less clear. The purpose of this systematic review was to explore the relationship of non-cognitive factors to academic and clinical performance in rehabilitation science programs.

Background: Cutibacterium acnes is a common pathogen associated with surgical site infection after shoulder surgery; current standard of care products are largely ineffective at reducing C acnes bacterial burden before surgery. The purpose of this systematic meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of peroxide-containing solutions (PCS) in decreasing the C acnes burden on the shoulder.

Methods: This was a systematic review of all level I and II studies investigating the effect of peroxidase-containing products for skin preparation.
