Objective: Since non-enhanced pelvic MRI is routinely performed for staging rectal cancer, an additional scan of the liver during pelvic MRI could be easily acquired. This study aimed to evaluate the potential utility of routinely adding non-enhanced abbreviated MRI (NE-AMRI) for liver metastasis screening, in comparison to CT alone (the current guideline-recommended modality), and CT combined with AMRI using hepatobiliary phase imaging (HBP-AMRI) (another potential alternative).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with rectal cancer between 2017 and 2022 at a tertiary institution.

Purpose: The decision for treatment after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in rectal cancer is intricately linked to tumor response and clinical parameters. This study was designed to elucidate determinants influencing treatment decisions for good responders to nCRT, while concurrently evaluating the ramifications of modifications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tumor response evaluation protocols.

Methods: A survey was constructed with 5 cases of good responder after nCRT based on the magnetic resonance-based tumor regression grade (mrTRG) criteria.

Introduction: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC), which differs in carcinogenesis from sporadic CRC (S-CRC). This study aimed to compare the clinical features and oncologic outcomes between UCCRC and S-CRC groups.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective cohort of patients who underwent surgery at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, between January 2010 to December 2020 comprised 46 patients with UCCRC and 9717 patients with S-CRC.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with early detection being crucial for improving survival rates. Despite the potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as blood biomarkers for CRC diagnosis, their clinical utility is limited due to complex and time-consuming isolation methods, unverified biomarkers and low diagnostic performance. Here, we introduce the ZAHV-AI system, which combines the zeolite-amine and homobifunctional hydrazide-based extracellular vesicle isolation (ZAHVIS) platform with AI-driven analysis for enhanced CRC diagnosis.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has the second highest incidence rate among all cancers in Korea, with approximately 30% of patients with regional CRC experiencing recurrence. Understanding the genetic drivers of recurrence is essential for early detection and targeted treatment. Therefore, many studies have focused on genetic analysis using tumor-normal matched samples, as this approach provides more comprehensive insights.

Few studies have investigated quality of life (QoL) improvements in patients with colorectal cancer or the benefits of digital healthcare interventions. This randomized controlled trial assessed the impact of mobile applications on postoperative QoL in patients scheduled for curative surgery for colorectal cancer. Patients were randomized into three intervention groups (each using a different mobile application for postoperative lifestyle management) and a control group.

Background: Rectal neuroendocrine tumors (r-NETs) are often misidentified as polyps, leading to inappropriate endoscopic treatment and incomplete resection.

Aims: This study investigated the occurrence and risk factors of residual r-NETs following salvage local resection (SLR) after incomplete resection.

Methods: The medical records of 95 patients who underwent SLR for histologically incompletely resected (R1/Rx-resected) r-NETs referred from other hospitals between January 2020 and August 2023 were analyzed.

Background: This study compares the perioperative outcomes of robotic rectal cancer surgery between da Vinci single-port (SP) system, the most recent system allowing minimally invasive surgery with reduced ports, and the da Vinci Xi system.

Methods: Patients who underwent robotic surgery for rectal adenocarcinoma from January 2016 to September 2023 at two tertiary referral centers were included. A retrospective analysis was conducted to compare key parameters between patient cohorts before and after propensity score matching.

Background: Since the introduction of powered circular staplers in colorectal surgery, there has been growing interest in their impact on reducing complications, particularly anastomotic leakage. This study compared short-term postoperative outcomes between powered and manual circular staplers.

Methods: This retrospective study included colorectal cancer patients at the tertiary referral center from April to October 2023 who underwent anterior or low anterior resection (LAR) using a circular stapler.

Background: Medical treatment for Crohn's disease (CD) has continuously improved, which has led to a decrease in surgical recurrence rates. Despite these advancements, 25% of patients will undergo repeat intestinal surgery. Recurrence of CD commonly occurs on the mesentery side of the anastomosis site.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze prognosis and risk factors, particularly the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy, in elderly colon cancer patients.
  • It involved a retrospective analysis of over 3,300 patients who had surgery for colon cancer, comparing outcomes between those aged 70 and older and those younger than 70.
  • Results showed that older age was linked to worse recurrence-free survival, but those aged 70 and above who received chemotherapy had significantly better overall and recurrence-free survival rates.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) on oncologic outcomes for patients with stage IIA upper rectal cancer and to investigate whether AC is associated with improved survival outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective study comprised 432 patients with rectal cancer above the peritoneal reflection who had undergone curative resection without preoperative chemoradiotherapy between 2008 and 2016. This study cohort was divided according to whether AC was received (AC group) or not (no-AC group).

Microabstract: This study evaluates the prognostic significance of obstructions in stage IIA colon cancer, distinguishing between partial and complete obstructions. It employs a retrospective review of 1914 patients with propensity score matching to analyze oncologic outcomes. Findings reveal complete obstruction as a significant risk factor for poorer outcomes, emphasizing the necessity for further research to refine treatment strategies, particularly regarding the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy across obstruction types.

Background: Prophylactic antibiotics (PAs) are standard for preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) post-colorectal surgery. This study aims to compare the effect of additional empiric oral antibiotics (OAs) alongside routine PAs to identify SSI risk factors.

Methods: A retrospective observatory analysis was conducted from January 2019 to December 2022 at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea.

Background: An anastomotic stricture after colorectal surgery is principally managed by endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD). Although this intervention is effective, however, subsequent procedures or surgical interventions are often required. This study aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of EBD for anastomotic stricture arising from colorectal cancer surgery.

Recent advancements in robotic systems have led to the introduction of the da Vinci SP system, which allows surgeons to perform colon cancer surgery through fewer ports. This study aimed to evaluate the perioperative outcomes of colon cancer surgeries conducted using the da Vinci SP and Xi systems. Patients who underwent robotic colon cancer surgeries between November 2020 and December 2022 at two tertiary referral centers were considered for inclusion.

Aberrant DNA methylation plays a pivotal role in the onset and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), a disease with high incidence and mortality rates in Korea. Several CRC-associated diagnostic and prognostic methylation markers have been identified; however, due to a lack of comprehensive clinical and methylome data, these markers have not been validated in the Korean population. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to obtain the CRC methylation profile using 172 tumors and 128 adjacent normal colon tissues of Korean patients with CRC.
