Effective surface treatment of implants is essential for enhancing osseointegration outcomes. This study assessed the influence of alcohol decontamination both with and without secondary argon-based non-thermal plasma (NTP) treatment on osseointegration of endosteal implants in a large translational (sheep) model. Ti6Al4V dental implants were utilized either as received (CTRL), or subjected to ethanol cleaning (for 60 s) followed by NTP (for 60 s) (Clean+Plasma); or treated with NTP alone (Plasma) for 60 s.

Background: Alveolar ridge preservation by guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a surgical procedure that can be performed prior to implant placement to increase the likelihood of survival. Autogenic, allogenic, or xenogeneic derived bone (particulate graft) are frequently placed in conjunction with a barrier membrane for GBR; however, advancements in tissue engineering have led to the development of promising synthetic alternatives. Fiber-based scaffolds exhibit high surface-to-volume ratio and thereby improve cellular adhesion, reduce the likelihood of dehiscence and poor bone regeneration often associated with poorly immobilized particulate graft.

Large osseous defects resulting from trauma, tumor resection, or fracture render the inherent ability of the body to repair inadequate and necessitate the use of bone grafts to facilitate the recovery of both form and function of the bony defect sites. In the United States alone, a large number of bone graft procedures are performed yearly, making it an essential area of investigation and research. Synthetic grafts represent a potential alterative to autografts due to their patient-specific customizability, but currently lack widespread acceptance in the clinical space.
