Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication associated with sepsis, yet no effective treatment is currently available. The primary mechanisms involved in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced septic AKI are oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. This study aimed to investigate the potential renoprotective effects of linagliptin, an antidiabetic dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4 inhibitor, against LPS-induced AKI with special emphasis on renal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) axis.

Nicorandil (NIC), an antianginal agent that acts both as an opener of adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels and a nitric oxide donor, has demonstrated protective and curative effects in various diseases. The predominance of these mechanisms varies based on the dose of NIC and the specific organ affected. This study scrutinized the possible beneficial effects of NIC in acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatic encephalopathy (HE) model through highlighting the role of KATP channels in mediating these effects.

Silybum marianum, known as milk thistle (MT), is traditionally used to manage liver diseases. This study aimed to investigate the role of MT extract topical application as a potential treatment for imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriatic lesions in mice with particular emphasis on phosphoinositol-3 Kinase (PI3K)/ protein kinase B (AKT)/ mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1)/ nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor (NRF2)/ nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) molecular cascades involvement. To address this aim, forty male Swiss albino mice were subdivided into four groups (n = 10 mice/group): control, IMQ model, standard group where mice were treated topically with IMQ, then the anti-psoriatic mometasone cream, and MT extract-treated group where mice were treated topically with IMQ followed by MT extract.

Article Synopsis
  • Status epilepticus (SE) is a serious neurological condition with a significant health impact, necessitating the exploration of novel treatments like the DPP-4 inhibitor alogliptin (ALO), known for its neuroprotective properties.
  • The study investigated ALO's potential in a rat model of SE induced by lithium/pilocarpine, where it was administered for 14 days before SE was triggered, using levetiracetam as a control.
  • Results indicated that ALO not only decreased seizure severity and neurodegeneration but also positively affected neurotransmitter levels, activated neuroprotective pathways, reduced inflammation, and promoted autophagy, suggesting ALO as a promising therapeutic option for managing SE.

  • Hematoma volume significantly impacts functional outcomes in acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), with the study focusing on its relationship with neurological deficits at admission.
  • A retrospective analysis of 338 patients revealed that NIHSS scores at admission mediated a portion of the variance in outcomes related to different ICH volumes, explaining 30% for smaller volumes and 14% for larger ones.
  • Key findings suggest that larger ICH volumes and specific locations in the brain are linked to worsening neurological conditions, while factors like younger age and lower ICH volumes promote recovery, highlighting the need for considering additional factors beyond NIHSS for patient prognosis.

Most dye stuffs and coloring materials are mainly categorized as hazardous pollutants in water effluents due to their nature as non-biodegradable, highly toxic and extremely carcinogenic. For this reason, rapid and efficient eradication of waste dyes from wastewaters before discharging into water streams must be accomplished by an acceptable approach as adsorption technique. Therefore, the present study is aimed and devoted to synthesize a novel nanobiosorbent from three different constituents, gelatin (Gel) as a sustainable natural product, graphene oxide (GO) as an example of highly stable carbonaceous material and zirconium silicate (ZrSiO) as an example of combined metal oxides for the formation of Gel@GO-F-ZrSiO@Gel by using formaldehyde (F) as a cross-linkage reagent.
