Prevalence of benzodiazepines use during pregnancy in Lebanon.

Pregnancy is a period of heightened risk period for many psychiatric disorders, particularly anxiety disorders. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the usage of psychotropic medications during pregnancy. Over the past decade there has been a notable increase in the use of medications during pregnancy, with benzodiazepines being the primary choice for alleviating anxiety.

[Ethical stakes of psychosocial rehabilitation].

Psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) is a therapeutic approach which aims to improve the overall functioning of people with severe mental disorders. We detail the principles of bioethics applied to care and seek to demonstrate how PSR meets the requirements of a humanistic psychiatry. The four fundamental principles of the ethics of care - autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice - are found in the practice of PSR.

Cognitive functions of patients treated with chemotherapy: A comparative study.

Objectives: Chemobrain is a well-established clinical syndrome that has become an increasing concern because of the growing number of long-term cancer survivors. It refers to the post-chemotherapy related cognitive dysfunction. The aim of this study was to objectively assess the impact of cancer treatment on the cognition of cancer patients.

Bullying and self-harming behavior in universities - A cross-sectional study of a sample of 327 university students.

Introduction: Bullying is a widespread public health issue, found in different contexts (e.g. schools, universities, workplaces, families), and it has negative consequences on both the perpetrator and the victim.

Effect of human-animal interaction on the well-being and quality of life.

Background: COVID-19, the economic and the political crises happening in Lebanon, have enforced social distancing and isolation, causing severe psychological states. However, these psychological consequences have highlighted the aim behind the interactions between humans and animals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the interaction between humans and animals and to compare the well-being and quality of life of the Lebanese pet owners in Lebanon in the face of stressors currently experienced and animals' companionship.

The risk of eating disorders following the August 4th, 2020 explosion in Beirut and its relationship with trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms.

Introduction: To date, no study has demonstrated the link between the diagnosis of provisional PTSD and ED in people exposed to the explosion of August 4th, 2020.

Methods: Online participants were classified into 4 categories according to the degree of exposure to the explosion (unexposed, slightly exposed, moderately exposed, and severely exposed). The screening for ED was done using the standardized SCOFF questionnaire and the screening for provisional PTSD using the standardized IES-R questionnaire.

Letter and Category Fluency: Normative Data for Lebanese Older Adults.

Background: Verbal fluency tasks are frequently used for neuropsychological assessment in clinical practice and research. It consists of two tasks namely category and letter fluency tests.

Objective: To determine normative values in category (animals, vegetables, fruits) and letter fluency [Mim () "M", Alif () "A", Baa () "B"] tasks in Arabic language in 60 s.

Identification of stuttering in bilingual Lebanese children across two presentation modes.

The goals of this study were to investigate whether Lebanese speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are accurate at identifying stuttering in bilingual children, to examine whether the use of video-recordings instead of audio-recordings allows for better analyses, and to explore factors that may affect the SLPs' judgments. In phase 1, 32 SLPs listened to narrative samples in Lebanese Arabic of 6 children who do not stutter (CWNS) and 2 who stutter (CWS). They were instructed to label each child as stuttering or not, and to explain what motivated their decisions.

Stuttering Severity Judgments by Speech-Language Pathologists of Bilingual Children Who Do and Do Not Stutter.

Introduction: Recent studies conducted with bilingual populations have shown that bilingual children who do not stutter (CWNS) are often less fluent than their monolingual counterparts, which seems to affect the accuracy with which speech-language pathologists (SLPs) identify stuttering in bilinguals. That is, misdiagnosis appears frequently in bilingual children and is more likely to occur with bilingual CWNS (false positives) than with bilingual CWS (false negatives).

Methods: The goal of the current study was to gain insight in the extent of this misdiagnosis.

Effects of a multilayered crisis on psychiatric hospitalizations in a university hospital in Lebanon; a retrospective study.

Lebanon is struggling with a multilayered crisis following the COVID-19 breakout, the economic crisis, and the Beirut port explosion. The aim of this article is to assess the effect of these crisis on the characteristics of patients hospitalized in psychiatry. This is a retrospective study conducted at the psychiatric ward of Hotel Dieu de France in Beirut between January 2017 and march 2022.

Mania associated olfactory dysfunction: A comparison between bipolar subjects in mania and remission.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the olfactory functions of patients with bipolar disorder in manic phase and to compare them to those of bipolar subjects in remission and healthy controls.

Methods: We recruited 96 participants divided in 3 groups: bipolar mania (MB), euthymic bipolar in remission (EB) and healthy controls (HC). All participants underwent an assessment of their olfactory functions using the Sniffin' sticks threshold and identification tests.

Clinical Correlates of Measured and Predicted Resting Energy Expenditure in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Resting energy expenditure (REE; i.e., the calorie amount required for 24 h during a non-active period) is an important parameter in nutritional rehabilitation of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN).

Eosinophils to Lymphocytes Ratio (ELR) as a Potential Inflammatory Biomarker in Patients with Dual Diagnosis of Bipolar and Alcohol Use Disorders: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

It is well-established that Bipolar Disorder (BD) has comorbidity with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and could present the same symptoms of an underlying diagnosis of BD, therefore delaying the proper relevant treatment. Recent studies show the occurrence of alterations in the circulating levels of inflammatory mediators in patients dealing with AUD as well as those with BD. The objective of this study is to get an assessment of whether patients with AUD and BD comorbidity [BD(+)] would present different ratios of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) in comparison with patients with AUD but without a BD comorbidity [BD(-)].

An adapted Arabic version of the Test of Nine Images for the illiterate Lebanese population: Validation and preliminary normative data.

Objectives: In the absence of a simple validated instrument to screen for cognitive impairment among illiterate Lebanese older adults, the aims of this study were to validate an Arabic version of the Test of Nine Images (A-TNI93) adapted by the Working Group on Dementia at Saint Joseph University: Groupe de Travail sur les Démences de l'Univesité Saint Joseph (GTD-USJ) for illiterate older Lebanese and to establish normative data.

Method: A national population-based sample of 332 community-dwelling illiterate Lebanese aged 55 years and older was administered the A-TNI93 (GTD-USJ) scoring free and overall recall. The sample is part of a larger national sample (1342 participants) used to validate an Arabic version of the Mini-Mental State Examination already reported.

Increased psychomotor retardation and tension as short-term neuropsychiatric adverse events of immune checkpoint inhibitors: A prospective cohort study.

Introduction: Patients undergoing cancer treatment as well as cancer survivors commonly describe behavioral alterations. As a matter of fact, neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPAEs) have been extensively described with older immunotherapies, especially with interferon alfa. However, there are little data investigating the NPAEs of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs).

The impact of lockdown and other stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic on depression and anxiety in a Lebanese opportunistic sample: an online cross-sectional survey.

Lockdown measures were taken since February 2020 in Lebanon, a country already going through a socio-economic crisis, to fight the new coronavirus pandemic. The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychological impact of the lockdown in Lebanon. A cross-sectional, online survey was conducted during the lockdown period in order to punctually assess depression, anxiety symptoms as well as eating and substance use disorders using self-rating scales (the DASS-21, SCOFF and CAGE-AID respectively), while identifying factors that might affect those outcomes.

The clinician-administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) structured interview for PTSD: A French language validation study.

The Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) is a structured interview that assesses the frequency and severity of each symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in relation to a single traumatic stressor over a 1-month period, allowing the trained interviewer to infer a current or lifetime diagnosis congruent with the 5th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the original English language CAPS-5 translated to French. Participants ( = 168) were recruited in clinical settings of France, Lebanon, and Canada.

Attitude of the employer in Lebanon toward candidates and employees with a stable chronic mental illness.

Objective: Research and study the Lebanese employers' attitudes, toward recruiting candidates with a mental illness and toward their employees who suffer chronic mental illnesses (A CMI) and the factors that may play a role in affecting it.

Methods: A combined cross sectional and retrospective study. Interviews conducted with a mix of 63 human resource managers and high executive employees to assess the integration of people with A CMI at the workplace, and the attitudes toward them.

Legalizing Medical Cannabis in Lebanon: the Complex Interface Between Medicine, Law, Ethics, and Economics.

In April 2020, after decades of discussions and controversy, the Lebanese parliament voted a law legalizing the cultivation, production, and sale of cannabis for medicinal purposes. Although the law leaves several unanswered questions and awaits implementation, the symbolic nature of this step in recognizing a positive role of cannabis in the local economy is significant on a regional level. The Arab world has traditionally been conservative when it comes to all drugs-related policies.

Supporting language development in Lebanese preschools: SLT and pre-KT practice and perception of roles.

Background: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are increasingly engaging in school-based interventions targeting children with language difficulties. Collaborative work between teachers and SLTs has shown to be beneficial in fostering language development in all children. Both groups of professionals have different but complementary roles in offering language support, according to children's needs.

The Impact of Retrospective Childhood Maltreatment on Eating Disorders as Mediated by Food Addiction: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: The current study aimed to test whether food addiction (FA) might mediate the relationship between the presence of a history of childhood maltreatment and eating disorder (ED) symptom severity.

Methods: Participants were 231 patients with ED presenting between May 2017 and January 2020 to a daycare treatment facility for assessment and management with mainly the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), the Child Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS 2.0).
