Background: Skin retraction and tightening are essential cornerstones of facial rejuvenation and body contouring. Retraction depends on skin recoil secondary to volume reduction, while tightening results from active contraction of dermal and subdermal collagen fibers and activation of the healing process promoting neocollagenesis and neoelastinogenesis. Use of energy-based (EB) technologies including lasers, ultrasound, monopolar and bipolar radiofrequency (RF), and plasma/RF is becoming increasingly frequent for aesthetic interventions.

Background: The outcome of aesthetic surgical or medical interventions is typically reported from the patient's or surgeon's perspective. However, facial cosmetic interventions have the potential to influence perceived personality traits. How these interventions affect personality perception remains largely underappreciated.

Background: The negative physical and psychosocial impact of scars, in particular burn scars, has been well documented. Altered personal appearance together with impaired function related to pain, heat intolerance, and contracture formation may last a lifetime and eventually can lead to low self-esteem and poor social and psychological adjustments. Though most patients recover within the first years and many report generally good life satisfaction and moderate quality of life (QoL), some severely burned patients continue to report impaired QoL almost 10 years after injury.

Giant congenital melanocytic nevi are large pigmented premalignant lesions present at birth that have an associated risk of malignant transformation. Full-thickness excision of these lesions would be required to eliminate this risk. However, giant nevi can leave behind large defects that can be challenging to reconstruct.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the ideal position of the umbilicus (belly button) in male cosmetic abdominoplasty, focusing on its anthropometric measurements to improve surgical outcomes.
  • Researchers found a strong correlation between umbilicus position relative to the anterior axillary fold and nipple positions, suggesting that these reference points are better for determining umbilicus placement than relying only on the abdominal crease.
  • The results propose a new predictive equation (U-AX = 1.618 × N-N) for umbilicus repositioning that emphasizes the aesthetic unity of the chest and abdomen in male patients.

Abstract: Reporting of esthetic outcomes in plastic surgery relies classically on ill-defined endpoints and subjective measures very often from the patients' and/or providers' perspectives that are notoriously characterized by subjectivity and questionable solid scientific validation. With the recent trend of increasing demand for all types of esthetic medical and surgical interventions, there is an urgent need for reliable and objective outcome measures to quantitate esthetic outcomes and determine the efficacy of these interventions. The current review is intended to analyze available evidence regarding advantages as well as limitations of eye-tracking (ET) technology in objectively documenting esthetic outcomes of plastic, reconstructive, and craniofacial interventions.

Notoriously characterized by subjectivity and lack of solid scientific validation, reporting aesthetic outcome in plastic surgery is usually based on ill-defined end points and subjective measures very often from the patients' and/or providers' perspective. With the tremendous increase in demand for all types of aesthetic procedures, there is an urgent need for better understanding of aesthetics and beauty in addition to reliable and objective outcome measures to quantitate what is perceived as beautiful and attractive. In an era of evidence-based medicine, recognition of the importance of science with evidence-based approach to aesthetic surgery is long overdue.
