Introduction: Malaria is a common and life-threatening infection. Malaria diagnosis needs to be fast and reliable. Although malaria microscopy is currently the gold standard, it is laborious, requires extensive training, and relies heavily on the proficiency of microscopists.

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals due to the John Cunningham virus (JC), is common in HIV-positive adults but rare in paediatrics. We present a unique case of a 14-year-old female with PML as the initial manifestation of HIV, with MRI lesions isolated to the posterior fossa. Initial symptoms included fever and rash, progressing to neurological deficits and ataxia.

Effects of improved on-farm crop storage on DNA methylation of mothers and their infants: evidence from a randomized controlled trial in Kenya.

Background: Stress during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes through epigenetic changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Among farmers in low-income countries, one important stressor is food insecurity, which can be reduced using hermetic storage bags. This study aimed to determine, for the first time, whether a hermetic storage bag intervention during pregnancy positively affects maternal and infant DNA methylation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-related genes FKBP5 and NR3C1.
