Fetoscopic two-layer closure for open neural tube defects: prospective study of obstetric, surgical and perinatal outcomes in the first 50 cases.

Objective: Fetoscopic repair for open neural tube defects (ONTDs) has gained acceptance among leading groups, although it remains controversial owing to the lack of a standardized neurosurgical technique. In 2018, our group described a new fetoscopic two-layer procedure with an exteriorized uterus for ONTD reconstruction. This study aimed to report obstetric, surgical and perinatal outcomes for the first 50 cases since the implementation of this technique and to provide comparative data with open fetal surgery studies.

Discovery of mammalian collagens I and III within ancient poriferan biopolymer spongin.

Spongin is a fundamental biopolymer that has played a crucial role in the skeletogenesis of keratosan sponges for over 800 million years. This biomaterial had so far remained chemically unidentified and believed to be an enigmatic type of halogenated collagen-keratin-based bioelastomer. Here we show collagen I and III as the main structural components of spongin.

B Chromosome Transcriptional Inactivation in the Spermatogenesis of the Grasshopper .

Background/objectives: We analyzed the relationship between synapsis, recombination, and transcription during the spermatogenesis of the grasshopper carrying B chromosomes (type B1).

Methods: The progression of synapsis was interpreted according to the dynamics of the cohesin subunit SMC3 axes. DNA double-strand breaks were revealed by RAD51 immunolabeling, while transcriptional activity was determined by the presence of RNA polymerase II phosphorylated at serine 2 (pRNApol II) immunolabeling.
