Investigation of 222-nm ultraviolet C irradiation bactericidal effect on the surgical field in a rabbit model.

Ultraviolet C (UV-C) not only has a bactericidal effect, but is also cytotoxic; however, UV-C at a wavelength of 222 nm with a high absorption coefficient for proteins is considered safe. We have previously reported the safety of 222-nm UV-C irradiation in humans and rabbits. This study evaluated the bactericidal effect of 222-nm UV-C irradiation on exposed surgical fields.

Successful Correction of Lower-Limb Malunions Using Intramedullary Nailing and Chipping Osteotomy: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND Lower-limb fracture malunion can result in angular deformity that requires surgical correction. Chipping corrective osteotomy (CCO) is a novel method that involves a chipping technique at the center of rotation of angulation, followed by single-stage internal fixation. This case series describes 3 cases of correction of fracture malunion of the lower limb managed using combined CCO and intramedullary nail stabilization.

Introduction A demographic survey of femoral pertrochanteric fractures provides several important information for the healthcare system of a country since this fracture is commonly seen in the elderly and has a poor postoperative functional prognosis that is a burden on society. The importance of accurately classifying pertrochanteric fractures as stable or unstable cannot be understated. However, the use of plain radiograph images alone is known to underestimate fracture severity with low inter- or intra-observer agreement.

Ampicillin/sulbactam versus cefazolin plus aminoglycosides for antimicrobial prophylaxis in management of Gustilo type IIIA open fractures: A retrospective cohort study.

Background: The antibiotic regimens for prophylaxis in the management of open fractures remain controversial. Although the use of aminoglycosides is widely accepted for treatment of Gustilo type III open fractures, aminoglycosides are often avoided in patients with risk factors. This study aimed to compare efficacy and safety of two regimens, cephazolin plus aminoglycoside (amikacin or gentamicin) and ampicillin/sulbactam (ABPC/SBT), in patients with Gustilo type IIIA open fractures.

Impact of joint line orientation on clinical outcomes in bilateral Oxford mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.

Background: Joint line orientation angle (JLOA) is the angle between the knee joint line and the floor. It has been reported to be related to postoperative outcome after TKA. Regarding unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), although it can be horizontal after UKA because it is a resurfacing surgery, there are few reports about the JLOA after UKA and its impact on clinical outcomes.

Second-look arthroscopic findings of cartilage and meniscus repair after injection of adipose-derived regenerative cells in knee osteoarthrits: Report of two cases.

Background: The purpose of this study was to use second-look arthroscopic findings and clinical assessment to determine outcome in two cases of knee osteoarthritis treated by intra-articular knee injection of adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs).

Case Presentation: This study involved two patients who received ADRC therapy for knee osteoarthritis and completed the six-month post-treatment follow-up period. For each treatment, 130 mL of subcutaneous adipose tissue was harvested using tumescent liposuction technique and manual aspiration of tissue from the thigh using a suction cannula under local anesthesia in the operating room.
