Cement Mantle Screws in Periprosthetic Hip Fracture Fixation Near Well-Fixed Femoral Stems May Not Impact Short-Term Femoral Stem Survivorship.

Background: Vancouver Type-B1 and C periprosthetic hip fractures have traditionally been treated using single- or double-plate fixation constructs. Concern exists regarding screws within the cement mantle due to the theoretical risk of cement fracture and eventual prosthetic loosening. The aim of this study was to assess femoral stem survivorship in patients with Vancouver Type-B1 or C fractures around a well-fixed cemented femoral component who were treated with a plate construct and screws into the cement mantle.

Kidney Function Following COVID-19 in Children and Adolescents.

Importance: It remains unclear whether children and adolescents with SARS-CoV-2 infection are at heightened risk for long-term kidney complications.

Objective: To investigate whether SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with an increased risk of postacute kidney outcomes among pediatric patients, including those with preexisting kidney disease or acute kidney injury (AKI).

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study used data from 19 health institutions in the National Institutes of Health Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) initiative from March 1, 2020, to May 1, 2023 (follow-up ≤2 years completed December 1, 2024; index date cutoff, December 1, 2022).

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe variant of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), categorized as a mood disorder due to marked symptoms of depression and anxiety, compounded with severe physical symptoms. Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) can manifest as low libido, difficulty achieving sexual pleasure, and dyspareunia, causing functional and psychological distress. PMDD and FSD are globally prevalent conditions with postulated biological, psychological, and social associations between them.

Post-acute and Chronic Kidney Function Outcomes of COVID-19 in Children and Adolescents: An EHR Cohort Study from the RECOVER Initiative.

We investigated the risks of post-acute and chronic adverse kidney outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the pediatric population via a retrospective cohort study using data from the RECOVER program. We included 1,864,637 children and adolescents under 21 from 19 children's hospitals and health institutions in the US with at least six months of follow-up time between March 2020 and May 2023. We divided the patients into three strata: patients with pre-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD), patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) during the acute phase (within 28 days) of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and patients without pre-existing CKD or AKI.

Subscapularis Management in Anatomic Total Shoulder Arthroplasty A Review.

Surgical management of the subscapularis tendon is critical to a successful outcome following anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty. However, the optimal surgical technique for adequate exposure of the glenohumeral joint while mini-mizing complications resulting from subscapularis tendon dysfunction continues to be controversial. Common surgical techniques for the management of the subscapularis tendon include tenotomy, peeling, sparing, and lesser tuberosity oste-otomy.

Operative management of gouty tophi in the region of the olecranon: a case series.

Background: Tophaceous gout affecting the olecranon region can result in local discomfort, skin ulceration, secondary infection, and considerable disability if left untreated. However, there are limited reports of outcomes, including postoperative complications and recurrence after surgical excision of tophaceous gout deposits at the elbow. The aim of this study is to present our surgical technique and minimum one-year outcomes after surgical excision of tophaceous gout involving the elbow.

Localized Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis Originating from the Lateral Meniscus in a 17-year-old: Case Report and Literature Review of Meniscal-Associated Localized PVNS.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TSGCT) are benign tumors originating from the synovial joint, bursa, or tendon sheath. Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), a subtype of TSGCT, commonly affects the hands and feet and has also been reported in the literature in the knee joint. There is sparse literature on localized PVNS arising specifically from meniscal tissue.

The future of health care service in orthopedic practice: telemedicine or in-person visits?

Background: The objective of this study was to assess patient satisfaction and preference for telemedicine vs. in-person visits for outpatient shoulder and elbow musculoskeletal consultation during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and in the future.

Methods: Patients who had telemedicine visits for shoulder and elbow musculoskeletal complaints at a single institution from March through June 2020 were invited to respond to a post-visit survey.

Mechanisms of CDDO-imidazolide-mediated cytoprotection against acrolein-induced neurocytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells and primary human astrocytes.

Acrolein is a ubiquitous unsaturated aldehyde has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurological disorders. However, limited study has been conducted into potential therapeutic protection and underlying mechanism against acrolein-induced cytotoxicity via upregulation of cellular aldehyde-detoxification defenses. In this study we have utilized RA-differentiated human SH-SY5Y cells and primary human astrocytes to investigate the induction of glutathione (GSH) by the synthetic triterpenoid 2-cyano-3,12-dixooleana-1,9-dien-28-imidazolide (CDDO-Im) and the protective effects CDDO-Im-mediated antioxidant defenses on acrolein toxicity.
