Opportunistic interventions (OIs) are health events facilitated by healthcare providers through education that can motivate individuals to adopt risk-reducing behaviours. Our aim was to evaluate transient elastography (TE) as an OI in patients with AUD by assessing changes in validated psychometric scores (PS) of alcohol insight and readiness for change. In this prospective, proof-of-concept pilot study, patients with AUD without TE in the past year were enrolled from an inpatient addiction unit.

Background: Guidelines recommend kidney transplant alone (KTA) in compensated cirrhosis based on a few small studies, but this is not widely performed despite its potential benefit to patients and the organ supply. Our aim was to determine the outcomes of KTA in patients with compensated cirrhosis.

Study Design: From 1/2012 to 12/2021, outcomes in KTA recipients with compensated cirrhosis were retrospectively compared to patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) but no cirrhosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the past 20 years, significant research has focused on understanding the causes and effects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), but there are still no approved treatments available.
  • Key factors contributing to the disease include excess fatty acids in the liver and the liver’s own fat production, along with genetics and other health conditions that affect how the disease progresses.
  • Despite early failures in drug trials, there is hope for new treatments, as phase 2 and 3 trials are currently underway, with two drugs (obeticholic acid and resmetirom) being considered for fast-track approval by the FDA this year.
