Livestock farming is a major emission source of emerging contaminants (ECs); improper management of ECs could lead to severe groundwater pollution. However, research on accurately controlling the impact of large-scale livestock pollution in groundwater and quantifying sources of ECs pollution from livestock farming to formulating effective control measures is scarce. For the first time, the groundwater near four livestock farms (broiler, dairy, aquaculture, and pig farms) was selected as the research object to characterize the ECs, analyze the impact of ECs on microbial communities, and identify the pollution sources of livestock groundwater by the fast expectation-maximization of microbial source tracking (FEAST).

This study cultivated a bacterial consortium (S60) from landfill leachate that exhibited effective heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) properties. Under aerobic conditions, the removal of NH-N reached 100 % when the S60 consortium utilised NH-N either as the sole nitrogen source or in combination with NO-N and NO-N. Optimal HN-AD performance was achieved with sodium acetate as a carbon source and a pH of 7.

Groundwater from different aquifers in the Zhanjiang area suffers from different degrees of nitrogen pollution, which poses a serious threat to the health of urban and rural residents as well as the surrounding aquatic ecological environment. However, neither the water chemistry and microbial community characteristics in different aquifer media nor the sources of inorganic nitrogen pollution have been extensively studied. This study integrated water quality parameters, dual isotopes (δN-NO and δO-NO), and 16S rRNA data to clarify the hydrochemical and microbial characteristics of loose rock pore water (LRPW), layered bedrock fissure water (LBFW), and volcanic rock pore fissure water (VRPFW) in the Zhanjiang area and to determine inorganic nitrogen pollution and sources.

Sodium persulphate (PS) is a highly effective oxidising agent widely used in groundwater remediation and wastewater treatment. Although numerous studies have examined the impact of PS with respect to the removal efficiency of organic pollutants, the residual effects of PS exposure on the biogeochemical parameters and microbial ecosystems of contaminated aquifers are not well understood. This study investigates the effects of exposure to different concentrations of PS on the biogeochemical parameters of petroleum-contaminated aquifers using microcosm batch experiments.
