Copy number variants (CNVs) comprise a class of mutation which includes deletion, duplication, or amplification events that range in size from smaller than a single-gene or exon, to the size of a full chromosome. These changes can affect gene expression levels and are thus implicated in disease, including cancer. Although a variety of tools and methodologies exist to detect CNVs using data from massively parallel sequencing (also referred to as next-generation sequencing), it can be difficult to appreciate the copy number profile in a list format or as a static image.

Postrhinal cortex (POR) and neighboring lateral visual association areas are necessary for identifying objects and interpreting them in specific contexts, but how POR neurons encode the same object across contexts remains unclear. Reducing the switching energy of ferroelectric thin films remains an important goal in the pursuit of ultralow-power ferroelectric memory and logic devices. Here, we elucidate the fundamental role of lattice dynamics in ferroelectric switching by studying both freestanding bismuth ferrite (BiFeO) membranes and films clamped to a substrate. We observe a distinct evolution of the ferroelectric domain pattern, from striped, 71° ferroelastic domains (spacing of ~100 nm) in clamped BiFeO films, to large (10's of micrometers) 180° domains in freestanding films.

Visual stimulus-induced gamma oscillations in electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings have been recently shown to be compromised in subjects with preclinical Alzheimer's Disease (AD), suggesting that gamma could be an inexpensive biomarker for AD diagnosis provided its characteristics remain consistent across multiple recordings. Previous magnetoencephalography studies in young subjects have reported consistent gamma power over recordings separated by a few weeks to months. Here, we assessed the consistency of stimulus-induced slow (20-35 Hz) and fast gamma (36-66 Hz) oscillations in subjects ( = 40) (age: 50-88 years) in EEG recordings separated by a year, and tested the consistency in the magnitude of gamma power, its temporal evolution and spectral profile.

A newly validated target for tuberculosis treatment is phosphopantetheinyl transferase, an essential enzyme that plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of cellular lipids and virulence factors in . The structure-activity relationships of a recently disclosed inhibitor, amidinourea (AU) 8918 (), were explored, focusing on the biochemical potency, determination of whole-cell on-target activity for active compounds, and profiling of selective active congeners. These studies show that the AU moiety in AU 8918 is largely optimized and that potency enhancements are obtained in analogues containing a para-substituted aromatic ring.

Polar textures have attracted substantial attention in recent years as a promising analog to spin-based textures in ferromagnets. Here, using optical second-harmonic generation–based circular dichroism, we demonstrate deterministic and reversible control of chirality over mesoscale regions in ferroelectric vortices using an applied electric field. The microscopic origins of the chirality, the pathway during the switching, and the mechanism for electric field control are described theoretically via phase-field modeling and second-principles simulations, and experimentally by examination of the microscopic response of the vortices under an applied field.

Vegetated buffers and filter strips are a widely used Best Management Practice (BMP) for enhancing streamside ecosystem quality and water quality improvement through nonpoint source pollutant removal. Most existing studies are either site-specific, rely on limited data points, or evaluate buffer width and slope as the only design variables for predicting sediment reduction, not considering other parameters such as soil texture, vegetation types, and runoff loads that can significantly influence the buffer efficiency. Understanding the phase transitions and domain evolutions of mesoscale topological structures in ferroic materials is critical to realizing their potential applications in next-generation high-performance storage devices. Here, the behaviors of a mesoscale supercrystal are studied with 3D nanoscale periodicity and rotational topology phases in a PbTiO /SrTiO (PTO/STO) superlattice under thermal and electrical stimuli using a combination of phase-field simulations and X-ray diffraction experiments. A phase diagram of temperature versus polar state is constructed, showing the formation of the supercrystal from a mixed vortex and a-twin state and a temperature-dependent erasing process of a supercrystal returning to a classical a-twin structure.
