Introduction: Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a frequent procedure for diagnosing and following up on various digestive disorders. It is often conducted under propofol sedation. The aim of this work is, first, to determine whether the addition of sufentanil, alfentanil, or ketamine to propofol has a propofol-sparing effect and, secondarily, how these drugs affect the patients' hemodynamic parameters and oxygenation as well as the duration of the procedure.

Background: Pulmonary aspiration syndrome remains a significant complication of general anesthesia, particularly in unfasted patients. Gastric point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) allows for both qualitative and quantitative assessment of gastric content, providing a safe and reliable method to assess gastric emptying and reduce the risk of aspiration during general anesthesia.

Methods: The survey was distributed to Belgian certified anesthesiologists and trainees between April 2020 and June 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The Cook® Airway Exchange Catheter (AEC) is a tool primarily used for replacing tracheal tubes but has a higher failure rate when switching from a single-lumen to a double-lumen tube.
  • A case report is presented involving a 58-year-old patient who faced unexpected difficulties during airway management when transitioning to a double-lumen tube after a surgical procedure.
  • The report illustrates a novel application of the Cook® AEC as a means to maintain ventilation and assist in intubation using a videolaryngoscope, emphasizing its utility in challenging airway situations despite potential failures during tube exchanges.

Background: To perform step-by-step analysis of the different factors (material, anesthesia technique, human, and location) that led to major pneumothorax during an infrequent pediatric cardiac MRI and to prevent its occurrence in the future. Anesthesia equipment used in a remote location is often different than those in operating rooms. For magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ventilation devices and monitors must be compatible with the magnetic fields.

Article Synopsis
  • Macacine alphaherpesvirus 1, or herpes B virus, is a virus found in macaque monkeys that can infect humans and cause serious illness with high mortality risks.
  • A unique case of this virus reactivating after 54 years resulted in severe meningoencephalitis, highlighting the need for antiviral preventive measures in survivors of central nervous system infections.
  • DNA sequencing of the virus from the patient's cerebrospinal fluid revealed it had significant genetic differences compared to other known strains, suggesting the need for more research on various BVs in monkeys.
