BACKGROUND Endovascular aneurysm repair for abdominal aortic and iliac bifurcation aneurysms can require exclusion of both hypogastric arteries, increasing the risk of colonic ischemia, buttock claudication or necrosis, and sexual dysfunction. To mitigate these risks, open surgical reconstruction is often considered; however, a less invasive alternative is the use of a bifurcated iliac side branch endovascular device to preserve hypogastric artery perfusion. This study reports outcomes in 12 high-risk patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists class 3 and 4, with aortic and/or bilateral common iliac artery aneurysms involving the hypogastric origin, treated with this endovascular technique.

Article Synopsis
  • Varicose veins should be understood as part of the larger issue of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), prompting the MEVeC project to enhance assessment methods and standardize treatment evaluations across practitioners.
  • The study evaluated surgical vs. laser treatment in patients with specific varicose vein conditions, using ultrasound Doppler to examine outcomes after interventions.
  • Results showed lower reflux rates in the surgical group compared to the laser group, highlighting the need for ongoing standardization and understanding of treatment efficacy in managing CVI.

  • Diabetes is a serious health issue that can cause problems like foot ulcers, which might lead to needing to have a toe or foot amputated.
  • * In a study, 12 people with foot ulcers were treated with a special therapy called platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to help their wounds heal better.
  • * After 6 months, 8 patients completely healed, and 4 showed big improvements, making PRP seem like a helpful treatment for these tough wounds.

Background: The aim of the present work was to evaluate the prognostic significance in patients with T1 breast cancer of tissue expression of the two oncosuppressors phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and non-metastatic clone 23 (NM23) as detected by immunohistochemistry.

Materials And Methods: We prospectively analyzed 62 patients who underwent surgery for a T1 stage breast cancer. Expression of PTEN and NM23 was tested for correlation with clinical characteristics and clinical outcome.

Background/aim: Leptin is a small hormone of protein nature, it is strongly involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism and its functioning mechanism is not yet well known or whether or not it is actually secreted by cholangiocytes, nor if the biliary tree expresses its receptors. In the past, various studies have tried to correlate leptin levels with certain neoplasms. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that serum leptin values can become a new sensitive and specific serum marker for cholangiocarcinoma.

Standard open repair of true or false aneurysms of the aortic arch usually require cardiopulmonary bypass, hypothermia and circulatory arrest, associated with increased mortality and morbidity rates. Thus, an alternative strategy that avoids cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and hypothermic circulatory arrest would benefit the patient. Endovascular stent-grafting has developed as a safe and effective treatment for descending aortic pathologies.

Background: Our intention in this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new open mesh hernia repair procedure, the "All in One Mesh Hernioplasty", for the treatment of primary inguinal hernias in adults.

Methods: Between February 2014 and February 2016, we performed the All In One Mesh Hernioplasty procedure on 400 patient suffering from primary unilateral inguinal hernia at our Institution. The prosthesis was placed on the floor of the inguinal canal, as described in the original technique, and later covered by the fibrocremasteric sheath.

Objective: Sinonasal adenocarcinoma is a tumor typically associated with exposure to occupational carcinogens. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published several data in order to classify carcinogenic power of physical-chemical agents as far as sinonasal cancer is concerned.

Materials And Methods: We report a clinical case of sinonasal adenocarcinoma observed in an 84 years old patient, without clinical history of past exposure to carcinogens, smoke and alcohol.

Background: Predictive factors of pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) are still not identified. The purpose of this study was to define them.

Materials And Methods: Data from consecutive LARC patients treated between January 2008 and June 2014 at our Institution were included in the analysis.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of preoperative computed tomography colonography (CTC) in locoregional staging in patients with abdominal pain secondary toocclusive colorectal cancer (CRC).

Materials And Methods: 80 patients with abdominal pain underwent CTC initially without contrast and after diagnosis with contrast. 47 patients had distal CRC and 33 had proximal CRC.

Aim of this work was to investigate a possible correlation between the frequency of JCV-specific T-cells and PML occurrence in HIV-infected subjects and in liver transplant recipients. A significant decrease of JCV-specific T-cells was observed in HIV-PML subjects, highlighting a close relation between JCV-specific T-cell immune impairment and PML occurrence in HIV-subjects. Interestingly, liver-transplant recipients (LTR) showed a low frequency of JCV-specific T-cells, similar to HIV-PML subjects.

Objective: Cervical radiation for head and neck cancer has been associated with an increased incidence of carotid arterial stenosis. Modern radiation therapy delivers higher doses with increasing long-term survival. In our study 50 patients with head and neck malignancies treated with radiotherapy are analized with colour Doppler ultrasonographic scanning of the carotid arteries.

Article Synopsis
  • Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare cancer that typically occurs more often in individuals with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), but five cases have been documented in patients without NF1 arising from the parapharyngeal space (PPS).
  • Imaging techniques, specifically CT scans and MRIs, were utilized in a reported case of MPNST in the PPS of a patient who lacked any family history or symptoms of NF1.
  • The imaging results were analyzed and correlated with the histopathological diagnosis to inform proper treatment planning.

Question Of The Study: Synchronous primary lung cancers (SPLCs) may pose a radiologic-pathologic and therapeutic dilemma in according to recent WHO classification.

Patients And Methods: Two cases of surgically treated SPLCs are reported.

Results: In the first case two nodules were detected by Computed Tomography (CT) in the upper right lobe.

Objective: To analyze clinical and laboratory findings in order to find variables predictive of severity of Biliary Peritonitis (BP).

Methods: Physical findings, course of illness, imaging and laboratory data were evaluated in 22 patients with BP, and statistically analysed to assess their prognostic significance.

Results: Serious illness and worse outcome were associated with: age > 60 years (P= 0.

Background: A 71-year-old woman was referred to a surgical oncology clinic after CT raised suspicion for a bladder neoplasm. She had previously undergone right hemicolectomy and received adjuvant chemotherapy for pT3N1MX cancer of the cecum. A retroperitoneal recurrence had been deemed unsuitable for surgical resection, and had instead been treated with chemoradiation therapy.
