The role of a sports mouthguard has been well established as one of protecting teeth from trauma particularly during contact sports. The aim of this study is to review the roles of sports mouthguard at both an elite and recreational level. From the history of the first mouthguards, to a modern custom-made mouthguard, the role of the mouthguard has expanded.

The present observational study aimed to identify the prevalence of oral health issues in this population and explore the relationship between oral health and factors relevant to athletic performance. One hundred and fourteen elite athletes triaged at a Sports Dentistry department from a university clinic were included for oral health assessment, self-reported periodontitis, basic erosive wear examination, and dental caries experience. They answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, oral health impact profile 14 to measure OHRQoL and OHV scale.

Objectives: We have previously reported high levels of oral disease in professional senior team footballers in England and Wales. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of oral disease in professional academy footballers, to identify if problems start earlier and to inform health promotion strategies.

Method: Professional academy football clubs in England (footballers aged 16-18 years) were invited to participate.
