Article Synopsis
  • CPA meningiomas are challenging to treat due to their location near vital nerves and blood vessels, leading to potential postoperative complications and unpredictable recovery outcomes.
  • A study of 95 patients at Mass General Brigham found that common symptoms included hearing loss, ataxia, and headaches, with gross total resection achieved in 62.1% of cases, which was more likely with smaller tumors and when the internal auditory canal was drilled.
  • Post-surgery, most patients experienced stable or improved hearing, but 25.3% showed tumor progression or recurrence, with lower odds of progression linked to complete resection grades and older age.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a new onco-functional outcome (OFO) classification for glioblastoma patients, combining the goals of complete tumor resection and avoiding functional loss into four categories.
  • Analyzing data from 858 patients over ten years, they found that the OFO classification significantly influenced overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates, especially in certain tumor types.
  • The results showed that achieving the best outcome (OFO1) was linked to improved survival rates and higher likelihood of receiving additional therapy, particularly with awake craniotomy procedures being more effective in avoiding deficits.

Background: The benefit of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is well established. We aim to study the benefits of IVT in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) who underwent unsuccessful mechanical thrombectomy (MT).

Methods: We included AIS patients who underwent MT for anterior circulation LVO with failed recanalization (modified treatment in cerebral ischemia [mTICI] score ≤ 2A).

: Diagnosis with a brain tumor is a critical event in the lives of patients and their families due to poor medical prognoses and complex clinical care. Spiritual care interventions have been known to have meaningful effects in morbid diagnoses and palliative medicine, but their role in the neuro-oncologic patient's experience is poorly understood. This systematic review explores the role of spirituality and its relevance to patient care in the diverse setting of brain tumors.

Background: Given the benefits of neuroendovascular simulation to resident education, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of simulation-based training for neuroendovascular intervention with primary and secondary catheters using a transradial approach (TRA).

Methods: Five neurosurgical residents (PGY 1-3) from our institution enrolled in a standardized pilot training protocol. Trainees used the Mentice (Gothenburg, Vastra Gotaland, Sweden) Visit G5 simulator with a type II arch using a right TRA.

Background: The exoscope has emerged as an efficacious microscope in adult spinal neurosurgery providing improved operative field visibility and surgeon ergonomics. However, outcome data and feasibility are underrepresented in the pediatric literature. We present the largest case series aimed at assessing operative and clinical outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing various exoscope-assisted spinal surgeries.

Article Synopsis
  • Grade 3 1p/19q co-deleted oligodendroglioma is a rare brain tumor that often progresses and recurs; this study focuses on the effects of repeat surgery on patient survival.
  • A cohort of 80 patients treated from 2001 to 2020 showed that those who had a second surgery after progression had better overall survival, while time to progression remained unchanged.
  • Key factors linked to higher mortality included a preoperative Karnofsky Performance Status below 80, not achieving gross total resection during initial surgery, and having ongoing neurological deficits post-surgery.

Background: The impact of extent of resection (EOR), residual tumor volume (RTV), and gross-total resection (GTR) in glioblastoma subgroups is currently unknown. This study aimed to analyze their impact on patient subgroups in relation to neurological and functional outcomes.

Methods: Patients with tumor resection for eloquent glioblastoma between 2010 and 2020 at 4 tertiary centers were recruited from a cohort of 3919 patients.

Background: Awake mapping has been associated with decreased neurological deficits and increased extent of resection in eloquent glioma resections. However, its effect within clinically relevant glioblastoma subgroups remains poorly understood. We aimed to assess the benefit of this technique in subgroups of patients with glioblastomas based on age, preoperative neurological morbidity, and Karnofsky Performance Score (KPS).
