Article Synopsis
  • The study compares patterns of multimorbidity in over 103,000 individuals with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) to 2.9 million people without RMDs from 2010 to 2019.
  • The research found that those with RMDs had significantly higher odds of various comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes, with 81% experiencing multiple conditions compared to 73% in the non-RMD group by 2019.
  • The findings suggest that individuals with RMDs are about 1.5 times more likely to have additional health issues, indicating a need for targeted healthcare interventions for this high-risk population.

Weight gain is a common consequence of treatment with antipsychotic drugs in early psychosis, leading to further morbidity and poor treatment adherence. Identifying tools that can predict weight change in early psychosis may contribute to better-individualised treatment and adherence. Recently we showed that proteomic profiling with sequential window acquisition of all theoretical fragment ion spectra (SWATH) mass spectrometry (MS) can identify individuals with pre-diabetes more likely to experience weight change in relation to lifestyle change.

Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) is an aggressive myeloproliferative neoplasm of early childhood with a poor survival rate, thus there is a requirement for improved treatment strategies. Induced pluripotent stem cells offer the ability to model disease and develop new treatment strategies. JMML is frequently associated with mutations in 11.

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, characterized by late clinical presentation (49-53% of patients are diagnosed at stage IV) and consequently poor outcomes. One challenge in identifying biomarkers of early disease is the collection of samples from patients prior to symptomatic presentation. We used blood collected during surgical resection of lung tumors in an iTRAQ isobaric tagging experiment to identify proteins effluxing from tumors into pulmonary veins.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the occurrence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS), as some symptoms can overlap between the two conditions.
  • Researchers identified 6.1% of D-IBS patients with low fecal elastase-1 (Fel-1) levels, indicating pancreatic issues, contrasting with none in chronic diarrhea patients or controls.
  • After 12 weeks of pancreatic enzyme supplementation, those with pancreatic insufficiency showed significant improvements in stool frequency, consistency, and abdominal pain, suggesting that enzyme therapy could help alleviate symptoms in this specific group.
