Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacterium of public health importance due to its association with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its role as a major cause of both hospital- and community-acquired infections. While Klebsiella species have been detected in foods, our understanding of their diversity and the potential risks they pose from food is limited. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the Klebsiella species population and their contribution to the burden of AMR, virulence, and heavy metal tolerance from diverse food samples.

Conventional heterodyne readout schemes are now under reconsideration due to the realization of techniques to evade its inherent 3 dB signal-to-noise penalty. The application of high-frequency, quadrature-entangled, two-mode squeezed states can further improve the readout sensitivity of audio-band signals. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate quantum-enhanced heterodyne readout of two spatially distinct interferometers with direct optical signal combination, circumventing the 3 dB heterodyne signal-to-noise penalty.

In this pilot study, we compared different sequencing-based methods to assess their relative accuracy with respect to distinguishing between viable and non-viable cells, using a live and heat-inactivated model community spiked into bovine milk. Importance: There is a lack of studies comparing the intended and unintended consequences of prospective review and feedback (PRF) with computerized decision support systems (CDSS), especially in the longer term in antimicrobial stewardship.
Objective: To examine the outcomes associated with the sequential implementation of PRF and CDSS and changes to these interventions with long-term use of antibiotics for and incidence of multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs) and other unintended outcomes.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study used an interrupted time series with segmented regression analysis of data from January 2007 to December 2018.

Background: COVID-19 imposes challenges in antibiotic decision-making due to similarities between bacterial pneumonia and moderate to severe COVID-19. We evaluated the effects of antibiotic therapy on the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 pneumonia patients and diagnostic accuracy of key inflammatory markers to inform antibiotic decision-making.
Methods: An observational cohort study was conducted in patients hospitalised with COVID-19 at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, from January to April 2020.

Fish-associated group B Streptococcus ST283 strains included strains nearly identical (0-2 single-nucleotide polymorphisms) with the human outbreak strain, as well as strains in another distinct ST283 clade (57-71 single-nucleotide polymorphisms). Our investigations highlight the risk for contamination of freshwater fish (which are handled and distributed separately from saltwater fish sold as sashimi) and the need for improved hygienic handling of all fish for raw consumption.

An improved synthesis of biotinol-5'-AMP, an acyl-AMP mimic of the natural reaction intermediate of biotin protein ligase (BPL), is reported. This compound was shown to be a pan inhibitor of BPLs from a series of clinically important bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and kinetic analysis revealed it to be competitive against the substrate biotin.
