Chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) is a common toxicity in patients with cancer, leading to chemotherapy dose reductions and increased platelet transfusions. Although there are well-documented data using thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RA) in both adult CIT and pediatric immune thrombocytopenia, there is a paucity of data in pediatric CIT. This is a single institutional, retrospective study evaluating the use and safety of romiplostim in pediatric patients with solid tumors undergoing cancer treatment.

Mortality after diagnosis of colorectal subsequent malignant neoplasms (CRC-SMN) among childhood cancer survivors is understudied. Using data from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program, we compared all-cause mortality of survivors with CRC-SMN to survivors without CRC-SMN and CRC patients in the general population without a childhood cancer history. Among 25,656 childhood cancer survivors, 96 developed CRC-SMN, with 50% diagnosed before age 40 and 19% before age 30.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between liver disease type (alcohol-related vs non-alcohol-related) and 6-week mortality following acute variceal bleeding (AVB) in patients with cirrhosis.
  • Researchers analyzed data from two large cohorts in the U.S. and Singapore, including 1,349 patients, and found that non-ALD patients had a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to ALD patients.
  • Incorporating the etiology of cirrhosis into existing mortality prediction models improved accuracy, highlighting the importance of considering the type of liver disease for patient care.

Article Synopsis
  • Hemipelvectomy is a complex surgery typically aimed at curing cancer, but its use for palliative care in advanced cancer cases is quite rare and not well understood.
  • A retrospective study reviewed outcomes for 10 patients with stage IV cancer who underwent this palliative procedure, revealing significant complications and limited survival benefits.
  • While some patients experienced reduced pain, none showed functional improvement post-surgery, indicating that more conservative treatment options should be considered, especially for patients with less severe pelvic tumors.

Objective: As metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) becomes more prevalent worldwide, it is imperative to create more accurate technologies that make it easy to assess the liver in a point-of-care setting. The aim of this study is to test the performance of a new software tool implemented in Velacur (Sonic Incytes), a liver stiffness and ultrasound attenuation measurement device, on patients with MASLD. This tool employs a deep learning-based method to detect and segment shear waves in the liver tissue for subsequent analysis to improve tissue characterization for patient diagnosis.

() is an opportunistic pathogen that lives on surfaces and skin and can cause serious infections inside the body. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are part of the innate immune system and can eliminate pathogens, including bacteria and viruses, and are a promising alternative to antibiotics. Although studies have reported that AMP-functionalized hydrogels can prevent bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, AMP dosing and the combined effects of multiple AMPs are not well understood.
