Background: Three-weekly high-dose cisplatin (100 mg/m) is considered the standard systemic regimen given concurrently with postoperative or definitive radiotherapy in locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (LA-SCCHN). Concurrent chemoradiation (CRT) with high-dose cisplatin is associated with significant acute and late toxicities, including acute kidney injury (AKI). Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of clonal disorders of the bone marrow characterized by peripheral cytopenias. Standard treatment in low- and intermediate-I-risk MDS is supportive therapy consisting of regular transfusions and growth factors, that is, erythropoietin (Epo) and granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF).
