The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a critical regulator of cerebral homeostasis, displaying high dynamicity of influx and efflux of substances to and from the central nervous system (CNS). In an exploration of the neurochemical pathways through which positive and negative emotions can influence the physiological characteristics of the BBB, this chapter delves into the multifaceted relationship between emotional states and BBB integrity and permeability. Negative emotions exemplified by stress, chronic anxiety, and depression have shown harmful effects on the BBB, suggesting a state of hyperpermeability that compromises the otherwise conferred protection.

Chronic stress impacts the brain through complex physiological, neurological, and immunological responses. The stress response involves the activation of the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary (SAM) system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, releasing stress hormones like norepinephrine and cortisol. While these responses are adaptive short-term, chronic stress disrupts homeostasis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and psychiatric conditions such as depression.

Introduction: Acute kidney Injury (AKI) is the most frequent complication of septic shock. Bedside ultrasound measurement of the renal resistance index (RRI) is an interesting way of assessment of renal hemodynamics.

Aims: To study the variability of RRI during septic shock and its correlation with the occurrence of AKI.

Article Synopsis
  • Endocarditis related to medical care can be particularly dangerous for hemodialysis patients due to their weakened immune systems and various types of vascular access.
  • A 38-year-old hemodialysis patient presented with fever and neurological symptoms, ultimately diagnosed with infective mitro-aortic endocarditis and associated complications like subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  • Despite initial treatment showing promise, the patient's condition deteriorated, leading to fatal septic shock and multiple organ failure, highlighting the risks faced by this vulnerable population.

Introduction: The placement of central venous catheters (CVC) is a frequent procedure in intensive care. It is not devoid of complications, the diagnosis of which relied for a long time on the chest X-ray. Currently, ultrasound appears to be an interesting alternative.
