This study describes the Arkansas Social Justice Coalition and early pre-post changes in the capacity of participating community-based organizations to address social and structural determinants of health during the formative stage of this coalition. We utilized population-level data to understand the coalition's reach to counties experiencing health inequities. Community-based organizations (N = 29) involved in this coalition all served rural counties and counties with greater burden from COVID-19 hospitalizations, heart disease mortality, and cancer mortality.

Background: Few studies have tested the effects of evidence-based practices on increasing smoke-free rules in the homes of Black and/or African American women who smoke cigarettes and/or little cigars or cigarillos and live in rural, low-resource communities. This paper presents findings from a randomized controlled trial that tested an intervention to increase the implementation of comprehensive (cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes [e-cigarettes], hookah, IQOS, pipes) and tobacco product-specific smoke-free home rules at 12-month follow-up among this group.

Methods: Participants (n = 184) received motivational counseling delivered by community health workers, carbon monoxide biofeedback, and culturally relevant health education materials at 1, 3, and 6 months (intervention) or education materials only (control).

Bile acids (BAs) affect the growth of potentially pathogenic commensals, including those from the Enterobacteriaceae family, which are frequently overrepresented in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In addition to numerous clinical studies, research using experimental models have contributed extensive evidence to the link between antibiotic exposure and atopic disease. A number of mouse models of allergy have been developed and used to uncover the specific effects of various microbiota members and perturbations on allergy development. Objective: This study examined relationships between home smoking/vaping bans and caregiver restrictions on child access to tobacco in the home among rural, Black/African American caregivers who smoke.

Methods: Data were from the baseline survey of a randomized trial conducted in 2020-2022 among caregivers who smoke cigarettes and/or little cigars/cigarillos (N = 188). Logistic regressions examined associations between independent variables (tobacco product-specific and comprehensive home smoking/vaping bans) and dependent variables (caregiver keeps tobacco in the home; among caregivers with tobacco at home, caregiver restricts child tobacco access at home) Models were adjusted for caregiver tobacco use, income, and additional covariates based on stepwise selection.

Asthma susceptibility is linked to dysbiosis in early-life gut microbiota, and the antibody secretory immunoglobulin (Ig)A (SIgA) is a key determinant of gut microbiota composition. SIgA is obtained through breast milk during the critical early-life window. This article describes Arkansas Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities (CEAL) Coalition initiatives and changes in measures of organizational capacity and sustainability via two waves of surveys. The Arkansas CEAL Coalition used several initiatives to address racial/ethnic COVID-19 disparities by building the capacity of community-based organizations and businesses to increase COVID-19 protective behaviors among their clients. Our study can inform future strategies that use a community-engaged coalition structure to reduce disparities among communities that suffer disproportionately from COVID-19.

We previously showed that the anti-fungal drug ciclopirox olamine effectively inhibits replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and HSV-2. Given the rise of HSV strains that are resistant to nucleos(t)ide analog treatment, as well as the incomplete efficacy of nucleos(t)ide analogs, new inhibitory compounds must be explored for potential use in the treatment of HSV infection. We previously reported that troponoid compounds profoundly inhibit replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and HSV-2 in cell culture, including acyclovir-resistant mutants. Here we describe a rapid and divergent synthetic route toward structurally novel αHTs functionalized with either one or two thioether or sulfonyl appendages.
