Barriers and unmet needs related to healthcare for American Indian and Alaska Native communities: improving access to specialty care and clinical trials.

Substantial healthcare barriers, especially to specialty and cancer care, exist for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals and communities at all levels. The unique history of AI/AN Tribal Nations and resulting policies, treaties, and relationships with the US government and federal agencies have created specific barriers to healthcare and clinical trial access for AI/AN peoples. Commonly, AI/AN peoples harbor a long-standing mistrust of the healthcare system based on lived and historical experiences.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) have been identified in 99% of cervical tumors. Considerable speculation exists about the role of HPV in cancer at other sites, such as skin, esophagus, and lung. One barrier to the study of HPV in extragenital tumors may be the inability to detect novel HPV types.

Immune-mediated tumor regression induced by CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotides.

T-cell based immunotherapy is an attractive approach for the treatment of multiple tumor types including cervical carcinoma. Immunostimulating DNA containing unmethylated cytosine-guanine (CpG) motifs have been successfully used as adjuvants to enhance immune responses to vaccines designed to trigger antitumor T-cell responses. Using a murine model of cervical carcinoma, we report here that repeated administration of synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides bearing CpG motifs (CpG-ODNs) without the need of vaccination into animals bearing large, established tumors resulted in significant antitumor effects.
