Adipocyte hyperplasia refers to the increase in the number of adipocytes, whereas adipocyte hypertrophy pertains to the enlargement of individual adipocytes resulting from the accumulation of lipid droplets. In this study, we found that activation of the STING signalling pathway occurs during adipogenic differentiation of 3 T3-L1 preadipocytes. Interestingly, inhibiting the STING pathway by using STING antagonist H151 or siRNA targeting STING promotes adipocyte differentiation and increases adipocyte numbers, while activation of STING inhibits adipogenic differentiation.

ZIP12, a plasmalemmal zinc transporter, reportedly promotes pulmonary vascular remodeling (PVR) by enhancing proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). However, the mechanisms of ZIP12 facilitating PASMCs proliferation remain incompletely appreciated. It has been acknowledged that proliferation-predisposing phenotypic switching of PASMCs can lead to PVR.

Our study explored the effects of lncRNA UCA1 on the proliferation and apoptosis in hypoxic human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (HPASMCs) and highlighted the endogenous relationship between UCA1, ING5, and hnRNP I in cell proliferation. Hypoxia-induced HPASMCs were used to simulate pulmonary arterial hypertension in vitro. Microarray assay was adopted to screen the dysregulated expressed lncRNAs in HPASMCs to find out the target gene of our study.

However, the mechanisms underlying these tumor-promoting phenotypes are not known. The microRNA miR-21 has been reported to be overexpressed in pancreatic cancer, and overexpression of miR-21 confers a poor prognosis to patients with pancreatic cancer.
