Background: Therapy of acute schistosomiasis in travelers currently relies on poorly consistent combinations of corticosteroids and praziquantel. Background: In order to evaluate the diagnostic value of schistosome circulating anodic antigen (CAA) detection, serum and urine CAA-levels were determined in a single cluster of 34 Belgian tourists at three timepoints within a period of 14 weeks following proven Schistosoma exposure in South Africa and compared with two in-house antibody assays.

Methods: Samples were collected 4-5 and 7-8 weeks post-exposure and subsequently 5-6 weeks following praziquantel treatment. Schistosoma antibodies were detected by an adult worm antigen-immunofluorescence assay (AWA-IFA) and a soluble egg antigen-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (SEA-ELISA), while CAA concentrations were determined by the Up-Converting reporter Particle labelled Lateral Flow (UCP-LF) test.

Control efforts have considerably reduced the prevalence of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) due to Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in West/Central Africa and to Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in East Africa. Management of T brucei gambiense HAT has recently improved, with new antibody-based rapid diagnostic tests suited for mass screening and clinical care, and simpler treatments, including the nifurtimox-eflornithine combination therapy and the new oral drug fexinidazole to treat the second stage of the disease. In contrast, no major advance has been achieved for the treatment of T brucei rhodesiense HAT, a zoonosis that occasionally affects short-term travelers to endemic areas.

Early schistosomiasis poses a serious diagnostic challenge, because current standard diagnostic techniques based on serology and egg microscopy lack sensitivity at the initial presentation. We report spinal cord neuroschistosomiasis in a traveller developing 6 weeks after exposure. The diagnosis was confirmed by Schistosoma mansoni-targeted real-time PCR in blood and cerebrospinal fluid, before the results of conventional methods became positive.

Background: Rapid diagnostic test (RDT) detecting the nonstructural 1 (NS1) antigen is increasingly used for dengue diagnosis in endemic and nonendemic settings, but its clinical utility has not been studied in travel clinic practice.

Methods: From August 2012 to July 2016, travelers returning from the tropics with fever were evaluated in the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp, Belgium) with the routine use of NS1 antigen RDT that provided results within 1 hour. We determined the diagnostic performance, assessed the management of patients with a positive RDT result, and compared it with that of historical cases of dengue diagnosed from 2000 to 2006, when only antibody detection assays were available.

We describe the epidemiological pattern and genetic characteristics of 242 acute dengue infections imported to Europe by returning travellers from 2012 to 2014. The overall geographical pattern of imported dengue (South-east Asia > Americas > western Pacific region > Africa) remained stable compared with 1999 to 2010. We isolated the majority of dengue virus genotypes and epidemic lineages causing outbreaks and epidemics in Asia, America and Africa during the study period.

Background: African trypanosomiasis is a parasitic infection sporadically imported to Europe by tourists or immigrants returning from endemic areas. We present the first and an unusual case of East African trypanosomiasis imported to Poland by a patient returning from a tourist trip to Uganda and Rwanda, which was successfully treated with pentamidine.
