Lavandin is a well-known aromatic plant cultivated mainly for its valuable essential oil. Nonetheless, little attention has been paid so far to the quantification of other natural products such as polyphenols. Accordingly, we examined the effect of increasing doses of UV-B radiation on the main phenolic content, antioxidant activity and estimated biomass of one year old lavandin pots compared with pots grown outdoors.

A comprehensive description of diverse essential-oil chemical profiles was conducted with twelve individual plants of Salvia lavandulifolia Vahl (Spanish sage) gathered from wild populations and grown under identical culture conditions. Whereas the chemical polymorphism within species of aromatic plants is well known, both the statistical significance of the differences in the chemical composition and the setting of chemical profiles have been scarcely studied. Remarkably different essential-oil chemical profiles were described for the wild-growing plants, which remained different during the three years of cultivation, even when acute situations of water stress occurred.

  • The main components varied by part: germacrene D and sesquicineole in inflorescences, germacrene D and myrcene in stems/leaves, and exclusively phyllocladene isomer in roots.
  • No specific compound was identified as a chemotaxonomic marker for E. aquifolium, but similarities with other species in similar environments were noted, marking the first report on the essential oils of this species.
