Use of advanced technology for the treatment of type 1 diabetes in pregnancy.

Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems have led to a paradigm shift for the management of type 1 diabetes outside pregnancy. As more women use AID at preconception, it is important to have data on the efficacy and safety of AID systems in pregnancy. A large randomized controlled trial (RCT) with the CamAPS® FX showed a 10 % increase in time in range compared to standard insulin therapy in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes.

Metabolic bariatric surgery is a highly effective and long-lasting treatment for obesity and related chronic conditions. Women of reproductive age represent the largest group undergoing these procedures. Observational studies suggest an increased risk of preterm birth and impaired foetal growth in this population, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Reconsideration of lowering gestational weight gain guidelines in pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes: evidence from a Belgian study.

Background: The suitability of the United States National Academy of Medicine guidelines for gestational weight gain in women with gestational diabetes remains uncertain, raising global concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the association of gestational weight gain with pregnancy and birth outcomes and to determine optimal ranges for gestational weight gain per pre-pregnancy body mass index category in women with gestational diabetes.

Methods: An epidemiological analysis between 2009-2018 analyzed a large Belgian cohort of singleton pregnancies with gestational diabetes and gestational age 38-40 weeks.

The 2024 Flemish consensus on screening for gestational diabetes mellitus early and later in pregnancy.

Background: Screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is important to improve pregnancy outcomes and to prevent type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. Due to a lack of evidence, the 2019 Flemish consensus did not recommend screening for GDM in early pregnancy. Recently, a large randomized controlled trial (TOBOGM) demonstrated that screening for GDM before 20 weeks reduces the risk of neonatal complications in women with risk factors when using higher cut-offs to define GDM compared to the criteria used later in pregnancy.
