Silicon (Si) and selenium (Se) are recognized as beneficial elements that may significantly improve plant's tolerance to drought stress. However, their action and efficiency on germination, biometric and physiological attributes are rarely compared on durum wheat under water-deficit conditions. This study highlights the effect of Si (15 mg L) and Se (1 and 2 mg L) seed priming on germination kinetic of four durum wheat varieties ('Karim', 'Maali', 'INRAT100', and 'Dhahbi') under osmotic stress (150 g L PEG6000).

Accurate prediction and optimization of morphological traits in Roselle are essential for enhancing crop productivity and adaptability to diverse environments. In the present study, a machine learning framework was developed using Random Forest and Multi-layer Perceptron algorithms to model and predict key morphological traits, branch number, growth period, boll number, and seed number per plant, based on genotype and planting date. The dataset was generated from a field experiment involving ten Roselle genotypes and five planting dates.

Guar ( L.), a summer legume, is becoming increasingly important as an industrial crop due to its high gum and viscosity content. This study investigated the effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA), chitosan (CH), and their combination on the growth, yield, and quality of guar under irrigation regimes.

Article Synopsis
  • The sepal of the Hibiscus sabdariffa L. plant is economically significant, but separating seeds from sepals during harvest is challenging; parthenocarpy (seedless fruit development) could reduce labor costs and increase profits.
  • The study examined the effects of gibberellic acid (GA), melatonin (M), and indole acetic acid (IAA) on inducing parthenocarpy in these plants, using varying concentrations and a randomized design.
  • Results showed that specific combinations of GA (800 and 900 ppm), IAA (1000 ppm), and M (100 and 200 ppm) significantly enhanced parthenocarpy production, while the control group had the highest mature seed

Article Synopsis
  • Drought significantly impacts crop yields, and organic modifiers like biochar can help mitigate these effects on crops such as guar, which thrives in arid regions.
  • A field experiment assessed various irrigation levels and biochar applications on the physiological and morphological traits of two guar cultivars, revealing that increased irrigation cycles and biochar positively influenced yield and nutrient uptake.
  • The results showed that the highest seed yields occurred under the most frequent irrigation, with one cultivar (RGC-936) performing particularly well, while biochar improved morphological traits more than the cultivars themselves.

With the world continuing to push toward modernization and the consumption of processed foods growing at an exponential rate, the demand for texturizing agents and natural additives has also risen as a result. It has become increasingly common to use thickening agents in food products to modify their rheological and textural properties and enhance their quality characteristics. They can be divided into (1) animal derived (chitosan and isinglass), (2) fermentation produced (xanthan and curdlan), (3) plant fragments (pectin and cellulose), (4) seaweed extracts (agar and alginate), and (5) seed flours (guar gum and locust bean gum).

Natural polymers are an efficient class of eco-friendly and biodegradable polymers, because they are readily available, come from natural sources, inexpensive and can be chemically modified with the correct reagents. Guar gum (GG) is a natural polymer with great potential to be used in pharmaceutical formulations due to its unique composition and lack of toxicity. GG can be designed to suit the needs of the biological and medical engineering sectors.
