Assessment of personal exposure to semi-volatile organic compounds was facilitated using silicone wristbands (SWBs), an easy-to-use sampler that reflects total inhalation and dermal exposure from all the microenvironments and the activities in which the user was involved. Hence, SWBs help understand exposure from various routes, activities, and microenvironments. Offices are critical microenvironments where workers spend one-third of their daily time on weekdays; hence exposure from offices should be more extensively studied.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are globally recognized contaminants due to their persistence, bioaccumulative properties, and toxicity. Despite regulatory efforts, these compounds continue to enter the environment through improper waste management practices, including shipbreaking activities. This study investigates the PCB and PBDE contamination of marine sediments along a 30 km coastline in Aliağa, Türkiye, involving one of the world's largest shipbreaking yards.

Pollution of indoor environment, where people spend much of their time, comprises complex mixtures of compounds with vastly understudied hazard potential. This study examined several important specific toxic effects and pollutant levels (177 compounds) of indoor samples (air gas phase, PM and dust) from different microenvironments after two extractions with focus on their gas/particle/dust distribution and polarity. The endocrine disruptive (ED) potential was assessed by human cell-based in vitro bioassays addressing anti-/estrogenicity, anti-/androgenicity, aryl hydrocarbon, thyroid and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-mediated activities.

Investigations of plasticizers typically focus on a subset of phthalate esters (PEs), but there are many more PEs in use, and alternative plasticizers (APs) are seeing greater use after recognition of adverse health effects of PEs.

Sediment contamination is a major environmental issue in many urban watersheds and coastal areas due to the potential toxic effects of contaminants on biota and human health. Characterizing and delineating areas of sediment contamination and toxicity are important goals of coastal resource management in terms of ecological and economical perspectives. Core and surficial sediment samples were collected from an industrialized urban watershed at the East Coast of the United Stated and analyzed to evaluate the PCB contamination profile and toxicity resulting from dioxin-like PCBs as well as reductive dechlorination potential of indigenous PCB halorespiring bacteria through dechlorination activity assays.

Past usage of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) in commercial products resulted in their continuous emission from sources. The aim of this study was to examine bioremediation strategies for BDE-209 contaminated sediments. Sediment microcosms were established to observe anaerobic debromination of BDE-209 under conditions representing three bioremediation strategies: biostimulation, bioaugmentation and natural attenuation. To simulate biostimulation, a defined mineral medium containing both a carbon source (sodium formate) and electron donor (ethanol) was added into sediments.

A detailed quantitative analysis of anaerobic dechlorination (AD) pathways of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment microcosms was performed by applying an anaerobic dechlorination model (ADM). The purpose of ADM is to systematically analyze changes in a contaminant profile that result from microbial reductive dechlorination according to empirically determined dechlorination pathways. In contrast to prior studies that utilized modeling tools to predict dechlorination pathways, ADM also provides quantification of individual pathways.
