Recent studies indicate that reduced levels of certain tumor-suppressing microRNAs (miRNAs) circulating in the blood are linked to tumor progression and poor prognosis across various types of malignancies. Identified from a comprehensive analysis of the NCBI and miRNA databases, we tested tumor suppressor miR-3619-5p in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Both test-scale and large-scale analyses demonstrated that plasma levels of miR-3619-5p were markedly lower in ESCC patients than in healthy volunteers.

Currently, the mumps vaccine is not routinely recommended in Japan. Adding the mumps vaccine to the routine vaccination program requires an accurate estimation of the mumps viral infection disease burden. However, no precise estimate exists in Japan because mumps surveillance is sentinel surveillance with a reporting definition consisting of only a clinical diagnosis (parotid swelling).

  • - Pigs are the main carriers of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), but a 2016 outbreak on Tsushima Island affected residents who did not farm pigs, prompting a study to assess the risk of JEV.
  • - A survey of 560 residents in early 2017 revealed high seroprevalence rates of neutralizing antibodies against two JEV strains, with notable levels in older individuals and those who spent time outdoors.
  • - Although wild boar samples tested negative for JEV RNA, they showed the presence of neutralizing antibodies, indicating that the virus can still be transmitted on the island and that wild boars may act as amplifying hosts.

Article Synopsis
  • Japan faced measles outbreaks primarily among young children who received only one dose of the measles-containing vaccine (MCV), prompting the introduction of a second dose in 2006.
  • A resurgence of measles between 2007-2008 highlighted the immunity gap among teenagers, who often missed the second dose.
  • To address this, a nationwide supplementary immunization program was implemented from 2008 to 2013, successfully vaccinating students in junior high and high school, ultimately leading to the verification of measles elimination in Japan by 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies show that low levels of certain tumour suppressor microRNAs (miRNAs) in the blood can lead to cancer progression and worse outcomes, but their role in cancer immunity wasn't explored until now.
  • Four specific miRNAs (miR-5193, miR-4443, miR-520h, miR-496) were identified as potential targets that might influence a protein related to immune suppression in cancer (PD-L1).
  • Findings suggest that low levels of miR-5193 in gastric cancer patients are linked to more advanced disease and poorer prognosis, and boosting this miRNA can enhance anti-tumour immune responses, indicating its potential for cancer treatment strategies.

  • A study analyzed 290 meningococcal isolates from Japan between 2003 and 2020 to assess their susceptibility to eight antibiotics, including penicillin and ciprofloxacin.
  • Most isolates were found susceptible to chloramphenicol, ceftriaxone, meropenem, minocycline, and rifampicin, while two isolates were resistant to azithromycin and some were resistant or intermediate to penicillin and ciprofloxacin.
  • Genetic analysis revealed that around 40% of penicillin-resistant isolates belonged to unique Japanese strains, indicating that resistance traits appear to be spread clonally rather than through gene transfer from other bacteria.

Human rotavirus strains having the unconventional G3P[6] genotype have been sporadically detected in diarrheic patients in different parts of the world. However, the full genomes of only three human G3P[6] strains from Asian countries (China, Indonesia, and Vietnam) have been sequenced and characterized, and thus the exact origin and evolution of G3P[6] strains in Asia remain to be elucidated. Here, we sequenced and characterized the full genome of a G3P[6] strain (RVA/Human-wt/JPN/SO1199/2020/G3P[6]) found in a stool sample from a 3-month-old infant admitted with acute gastroenteritis in Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the "obesity paradox" in gastric cancer (GC) patients, focusing on how obesity might be related to better outcomes in certain cases despite common beliefs about its negative health impacts.
  • Among 1,536 patients who had surgery for GC, those who were obese showed a trend toward improved prognosis, particularly those without postoperative abdominal infections (PAIC), which drastically affected survival rates.
  • PAIC proved to be a significant detrimental factor for both obese and non-obese patients, with a particularly worse outcome for obese patients who experienced higher rates of recurrence in the abdominal cavity post-surgery.
