Objective: Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) is a complex surgical procedure that is challenging to understand. We aimed to assess the readability, understandability, and actionability of online patient-directed materials for PD.

Methods: We evaluated online patient-focused educational materials about PD.

Introduction: Obesity is a global public health issue, and metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) remains most effective intervention for achieving and maintaining long-term weight loss. However, rapid weight loss following MBS increases the risk of gallstone formation. Concomitant cholecystectomy (CC) during MBS has been proposed to mitigate this risk, but recent studies present conflicting evidence regarding its safety and efficacy, leaving no clear consensus.

Background: In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of gender bias in the field of surgery, a systematic review was conducted to assess relevant perceptions.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and LILACS for qualitative studies on how students, trainees, and surgeons recognize gender aspects concerning surgery. Data was thematically synthesized according to Thomas and Harden's methodology.

Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most frequently performed procedures by general surgeons. Strategies for minimizing bile duct injuries including use of the critical view of safety method, as outlined by the SAGES Safe Cholecystectomy Program, are not always possible. Subtotal cholecystectomy has emerged as a safe "bail-out" maneuver to avoid iatrogenic bile duct injury in these difficult cases.

Introduction: Laparoscopic IPOM is technically challenging, especially regarding fascial closure. Hybrid repair has been proposed as a simpler approach. We aimed to compare hybrid and laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh repair (IPOM) in patients undergoing ventral hernia repair (VHR).

Introduction: Women are underrepresented in surgical authorship. Using big data analyses, we aimed to investigate women's representation as first and last authors in surgical publications worldwide and identify underlying predictors.

Methods: We retrieved eligible surgical journals using Scimago Journal & Country Rank 2021.

Introduction: Postoperative pain management is crucial for patient recovery with Quadratus Lumborum Block (QLB) and Transversus Abdominis Plane Block (TAPB) emerging as potential techniques. We aimed to compare the analgesic efficacy of QLB and TAPB in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair.

Methods: We performed a systematic review of Cochrane, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases to identify randomized controlled trials comparing QLB and TAPB in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair.

Purpose: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with severe postoperative pain. Continuous adductor canal blockade provides analgesia while preserving quadriceps muscle strength. Nevertheless, uncertainty still exists as to the optimal adductor canal catheter placement approach.

Introduction: There is a gender gap in the surgical field worldwide. Brazil and low- and middle-income countries generally tend to have a more profound gap. Therefore, we aim to assess the gender distribution in Brazilian surgical residencies.

Purpose: There is considerable variability among surgeons regarding the type of mesh used in ventral hernia repair. There has been an increasing incidence of mesh fractures with lightweight (LW) and mediumweight (MW) meshes. However, HW mesh has been associated with a greater foreign body sensation and chronic pain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines whether RAS oncogene mutation status affects the frequency of positive surgical margins in liver metastases from colorectal cancer.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 studies involving 7,391 patients found no significant difference in positive resection margins between RAS-mutated and non-mutated patients.
  • Despite the known prognostic implications of RAS mutations in colorectal cancer, the analysis suggests that RAS status does not influence the prevalence of positive margins during surgical resection.

Background: Surgical care has been neglected and recently discussed by the World Health Organization as a necessary component of health care. Situations that distance individuals and medical services are of particular concern. We aim to estimate the distance a patient who lives in a municipality without a general surgeon would have to travel to access surgical care; and to describe the geographical distribution of the surgical workforce.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined women's representation on editorial boards of surgical, anesthesia, and obstetric (SAO) journals in Latin America in 2021.
  • Despite analyzing 19 out of 25 journals, women only held 17% of editorial positions, with fewer in academic roles (14.3%) compared to senior (28.9%) and non-academic (38.4%) ones.
  • The findings indicate significant underrepresentation of women, particularly in surgical journals, and suggest the need for strategies to promote gender equity in SAO specialties.

There is a gender gap in the representation of women in the authorship of surgical literature worldwide. In Brazil, data on the gender distribution of the authorship of articles are scarce; and hence, there is a lack of awareness about the contemporary situation of women surgeons within the academic surgery in the country. In light of this, we conducted this study with an aim to describe and evaluate the authorship trends in a Brazilian surgical journal over a period of 10 years (2010-2019).

We aimed to analyze the representativeness of women surgeons in academic and leadership positions in Brazil. We investigated women representativeness across surgical departments of 25 Brazilian universities (2020); across boards of 10 Brazilian surgical societies (2020), and, as speakers, in 281 surgical events (Jan-2014 to Dec-2020). From 383 individuals in university departments, 43 (11.

Background/objectives: Self-medication, despite some benefits, carries many risks, especially when practiced by older adults who are polymedicated. Information addressing the prevalence and associated factors of self-medication in older age in a European context is scarce and sometimes contradictory. This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of self-medication among older adults across Europe and to identify its predictive factors.

Trisomy 21 is considered the most common chromosomal aneuploidy, and congenital heart disease (CHD) is highly prevalent and relevant to the morbidity and mortality of these patients. Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare CHD characterized by tricuspid valve dysplasia with inferior septal leaflet displacement. Herein, we described a patient with trisomy 21 who presented with EA and discuss the association between the two conditions based on a literature review.
