Purpose: Effective communication with patients regarding long-term conservative treatment for idiopathic scoliosis necessitates an understanding of its natural history. Existing predictive models have limitations in this regard. Our study aimed to develop and evaluate the reliability and utility of the Idiopathic Scoliosis Graphical Representation Of Worsening Trend of Natural History (IS-GROWTH) communication tool.

Purpose: The Brace Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Trial (BrAIST) reported a bracing dose-response curve in AIS for brace-wearing time (BWT) up to 18 h/day (h/d) on the outcome end-of-treatment < 50°. We aimed to examine the dose-response curve for this and other relevant outcomes in cases of BWT > 18 h/d.

Methods: Design: Retrospective secondary analysis of consecutively collected data.

In neonates with pulmonary hypertension (PH) supported on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO), keeping the ductus arteriosus (DA) open ensures a high cardiac output of well-oxygenated blood through the right to left (R-L) ductal shunt. After PH resolution, timely closure of the patent DA (PDA) prevents pulmonary overcirculation, systemic hypoperfusion, and unsuccessful ECMO weaning. We retrospectively evaluated its impact on the echocardiographic and hemodynamic features of 18 newborns undergoing VV-ECMO because of acute hypoxic respiratory failure in PH.

: The Sforzesco brace is a very rigid push-up brace effective in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). We recently developed a new Sforzesco brace based on modularity (the Modular Italian brace-MI brace) that could allow standardization, facilitating global expertise diffusion, increased modifiability and adaptability, and cost savings due to longer brace life. We aimed to compare the short-term results of the two braces.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review found that brace-wearing compliance varied widely and that using wearable sensors can effectively track actual wearing times and improve adherence when combined with interventions such as counseling and education.
  • * The study suggests that while current compliance rates average around 58.8%, targeted interventions can boost adherence significantly, indicating a need for more high-quality research on this topic.

Background: Pathogenic variants in the dynamin 1 like gene are related to abnormal mitochondrial dynamics and distributions and are associated to variable clinical phenotypes. A few patients harboring the p.Arg403Cys missense variant appears to be different from the classical, more severe phenotypes, showing sudden onset of drug resistant seizures after a previously normal or slightly delayed development.
