Article Synopsis
  • * A custom SureSelect target enrichment assay was modified to improve its effectiveness in sequencing adenoviruses from clinical samples, leading to successful whole genome sequencing of 91.6% of samples.
  • * While the modified protocol shows good performance, particularly with respiratory and fecal samples, further investigation is needed due to some variations in enrichment success based on sample type and adenovirus concentration.

Background: An increase in acute severe hepatitis of unknown aetiology in previously healthy children in the UK in March, 2022, triggered global case-finding. We aimed to describe UK epidemiological investigations of cases and their possible causes.

Methods: We actively surveilled unexplained paediatric acute hepatitis (transaminase >500 international units per litre) in children younger than 16 years presenting since Jan 1, 2022, through notifications from paediatricians, microbiologists, and paediatric liver units; we collected demographic, clinical, and exposure information.

  • Monkeypox (MPXV) is a less severe, emerging zoonotic viral disease that poses a global health threat, primarily transmitted through close contact and affecting high-risk groups like healthcare workers and men who have sex with men.* -
  • The disease is characterized by skin lesions, primarily on the face and extremities, and while most cases are mild, it can have long-term health effects.* -
  • Vaccination against MPXV is available but should target high-risk individuals, and a coordinated "one globe, one health" approach is crucial to manage the outbreak and leverage lessons from past pandemics like COVID-19.*

This study investigates the spread of influenza, clinical consequences and potential contributing factors.
