Novel treatment strategy targeting interleukin-6 induced by cancer associated fibroblasts for peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are a crucial component in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of peritoneal metastasis (PM), where they contribute to tumor progression and metastasis via secretion of interleukin-6 (IL-6). Here, we investigated the role of IL-6 in PM of gastric cancer (GC) and assessed whether anti-IL-6 receptor antibody (anti-IL-6R Ab) could inhibit PM of GC. We conducted immunohistochemical analysis of IL-6 and α-smooth muscle (α-SMA) expressions in clinical samples of GC and PM, and investigated the interactions between CAFs and GC cells in vitro.

Epidural versus patient-controlled intravenous analgesia on pain relief and recovery after laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer: randomized clinical trial.

Background: Epidural analgesia (EDA) is a main modality for postoperative pain relief in major open abdominal surgery within the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocol. However, it remains unclear whether EDA is an imperative modality in laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG). This study examined non-inferiority of patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) to EDA in terms of postoperative pain and recovery in patients who underwent LG.

An Assessment Rubric for a Resident Training Program in Surgery: A Single-Institution Experience.

Using a Collaborative Action Research model, our research team established a one-month clinical resident training program for first- and second-year clinical residents. We created and implemented an assessment rubric to assess the residents' progress toward independent practice in surgery, and thereby, to evaluate the program itself. The program included training in three areas: basic techniques and procedures in the operating room, surgical ward management, and academic activities.

Modulation of expression in cancer-associated fibroblasts prevents peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in the tumor microenvironment are associated with the establishment and progression of peritoneal metastasis. This study investigated the efficacy of replicative oncolytic adenovirus-mediated gene therapy (OBP-702) against CAFs and peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer (GC). Higher CAF expression in the primary tumor was associated with poor prognosis of GC, and higher CAF expression was also observed with peritoneal metastasis in immunohistochemical analysis of clinical samples.

Peritonitis with small intestinal perforation caused by a plastic bread bag clip: A case report.

Introduction: Cases of a foreign body ingestion often require surgical treatment due to perforation or penetration. There is a possibility that plastic bread bag clips also cause serious adverse events when they are ingested.
