Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection poses a significant health risk, particularly for high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM), people living with HIV (PLHIV), and transgender individuals. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, uptake among these groups remains suboptimal due to various social and behavioral barriers (BeSD). A cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) clinic in Bologna, Italy, from 8 April to 12 April 2024 using a paper questionnaire, investigating HPV vaccine uptake and BeSD factors influencing vaccination decisions.

Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the effectiveness of original and bivalent COVID-19 vaccines in reducing COVID-19-associated hospitalizations among the adult population of Turin, Italy.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, test-negative, case-control study of 5768 adults aged ≥50 years who had symptoms that were consistent with COVID-19-like illness and were admitted to the hospitals of the Turin Health Unit network from 1 January 2021 to 31 January 2023. We evaluated the effectiveness of the vaccines that at the time of the study were authorized in the European Union (original/bivalent BNT162b2; original mRNA-1273; ChAdOx1-S; Ad26.

The endoscopic endonasal route has demonstrated to be the approach of choice for a large majority of clival chordomas (CCs). However, its results in elderly patients are under-evaluated in the literature. The aim of this study is to assess the surgical outcome for these patients, determining the factors associated with a larger tumor resection in this population.

Article Synopsis
  • In Italy, individuals turning 65 are recommended to receive free vaccinations for Herpes Zoster, pneumococcal disease, and influenza each year, but achieving high vaccination rates is difficult.
  • A study in Forlì, Northern Italy, analyzed vaccination coverage for these diseases, evaluating how factors like altitude, urban planning, and the presence of vaccination centers affect vaccine uptake among 15,272 individuals.
  • Results showed low vaccination rates (26.9% for HZ, 36.7% for PCV, and 43.5% for FLU), indicating that living in flat areas and having nearby vaccination services significantly increased uptake, highlighting the need for local health authorities to consider geographic and accessibility factors in their campaigns

Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections are increasingly linked to neurological issues like encephalitis and encephalopathy, prompting a systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant studies and case reports.
  • The analysis included 15 studies with over 7,700 RSV infections and found a pooled prevalence of 2.20 cases of encephalitis/encephalopathy per 100 RSV cases, suggesting a significant association.
  • While RSV detection in the central nervous system (CNS) was rare (about 17.86% of cases), it was more common in males and often resulted in long-term complications, highlighting the virus as a notable but infrequent cause of encephalitis.

Article Synopsis
  • - A systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody, in preventing lower respiratory tract diseases caused by RSV in infants, analyzing data from 5 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 7 real-world studies.
  • - The analysis, covering 45,238 infants, found an overall immunization efficacy of 88.40% in reducing hospital admissions due to RSV, although efficacy decreased with longer observation times.
  • - While nirsevimab proved effective, the increased risk of breakthrough infections over longer follow-up periods suggests the need for future research to refine public health strategies during RSV seasons.

A systematic review and meta-analysis was designed in order to ascertain the effectiveness of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination in preventing lower respiratory tract diseases (LRTD) in older adults (age ≥ 60 years). Studies reporting on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched for in three databases (PubMed, Embase, and Scopus) and the preprint repository medRxiv until 31 March 2024. A total of nine studies were eventually included, two of which were conference proceedings.

Context: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and cancer are the two main leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Suboptimal diet, poor in vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grain, and rich in processed and red meat, refined grains, and added sugars, is a primary modifiable risk factor. Based on health, economic and ethical concerns, plant-based diets have progressively widespread worldwide.

Background: Language barriers are one of the main obstacles faced by migrants in accessing healthcare services. A compromised communication between migrants and Healthcare Providers in vaccination setting can result in increased vaccine hesitancy and decreased vaccine uptake. The objective of the current study is to investigate Healthcare Providers' perceptions about linguistic barriers faced during both routinary vaccination practice and the extraordinary vaccination program for Ukrainian refugees in the Local Health Authorities of Bologna and Romagna (Italy).

Poor literature report actual and detailed costs of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell pathway in a real-life setting. We retrospectively collect data for all patients with relapsed/refractory aggressive large B-cell lymphoma who underwent leukapheresis between August 2019 and August 2022. All costs and medical resource consumption accountability were calculated on an intention-to-treat (ITT) basis, starting from leukapheresis to the time when the patient (infused or not) exited the CAR T-cell pathway for any reason.

Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common cause of respiratory tract infections. Usually associated with infants and children, an increasing amount of evidence suggests that RSV can cause substantial morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals, including recipients of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The present systematic review was therefore designed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to collect available evidence about RSV infections in BMT recipients.

Background: Herpes Zoster is an age dependent disease and as such it represents a problem in the Italian social context, where the demographic curve is characterized by an overrepresentation of the elderly population. Vaccines against Herpes Zoster are available, safe and effective, however coverage remains sub-optimal. This study was therefore conducted to examine the variations in Herpes Zoster vaccine uptake and confidence across different regions in Italy.
