Environmental contamination is a global concern, and quality assessment of different environmental matrices is essential for developing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) such as phytoremediation, to reduce ecological risks. This systematic review aims to collect all recent information on the application of Poaceae species in phytoremediation, highlighting plant traits useful for phytoremediation of different environmental matrices, and determining needed improvements to enhance NBS efficiency. A time period of 11 years (2012-2023) was considered, and 30 variables were extracted from the selected papers to investigate: which species and contaminants were the most studied, the criteria used to assess the performance of different species, and the phytoremediation process aspects that need to be addressed to develop more effective NBS.

We explored relationships between particulate matter (PM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) leaf concentrations, uptake rates and leaf surface functional traits in four Mediterranean evergreen trees (Chamaerops humilis, Citrus × aurantium, Magnolia grandiflora, and Quercus ilex) during a dry month. Pollutant leaf concentration at different dates and uptake rate were correlated. We quantified PM by gravimetric analysis, PAHs were extracted from intact and dewaxed leaves and analyzed by GC-MS, and cuticle thickness, number and surface of stomata (N and S) and trichomes (N and S) were determined by optical microscopy.

Phytoremediation involving the use of microorganisms with tolerant plant species represents a new frontier for on-site remediation of pluricontaminated soils. In this study, the effectiveness of a biotechnological strategy, involving the use of Festuca arundinacea and a pool of microorganisms, was assessed by a mesocosm experiment and an in-depth rhizospheric metatranscriptomic analysis. The chemical profile of mesocosm soil at the end of the experiment (240 days) showed that the decrease of trace elements such as Cd, Hg, Pb, Sn, Tl, V and Zn in the soil was enhanced by our biological combination.

Native plant species were screened for their remediation potential for the removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil of Bagnoli brownfield site (Southern Italy). Soils at this site contain all of the PAHs congeners at concentration levels well above the contamination threshold limits established by Italian environmental legislation for residential/recreational land use, which represent the remediation target.
